2017-2018 Toronto Raptors Thread: "O.G...Change Is In the Air!"

Casey fired.
I use to throw the odd pumpkin around as kid on halloween. The raptors lost me when Antonio Davis started talking about the metric system.

Seriously does anyone else remember this, totally ridiculous.

Hey I don't follow the Raptors at all, but I know Ujiri is the president and they have some other dude that's actually the GM. Everything that ever happens though it seems like Ujiri is making all the moves (based on all the interviews and press coverage). So what the hell does the GM actually do if Ujiri is the guy who's responsible for all the player acquisitions and coaching decision?

I wonder how many times someone's won coach of the year and been fired in the same year. In any sport.

Word is that Casey had refused to take a family vacation very near to where Kyle Lowry spends his summers.

I don't know that answer but Overdrive had a guy on yesterday that it happened to. I assume very rare??

George Karl...

In Hockey, I believe Ted Nolan won Coach of the Year with the Sabres and got canned back in the 90's.

This speaks to me.

Aesthetic ("and scientifically accurate") but unappealing.

I prefer the dino version.  Otherwise, that particular Raptors logo needs to be redone differently, in it's entirety.

Velociraptors (and that family line) had feathers! T-rexes too!

Jurassic Park popularized the 'raptor' look; Michael Crichton/Stephen Spielberg were aware of the research and fossil record on feathers at that time but opted for the classic lizard skin look because it would be more cool/scary. They also chose velociraptor instead of the more cumbersome to pronounce and less-cool-sounding Deinonychus that the book raptor was based off of.

The Toronto NBA team, if I recall correctly, came down to the Raptors or the T-rexes largely because of that film's popularity at the time.

I think T-Rexes was in the running at one point but the actual runner-up was "Towers" as far as I can recall.

You're right!

Beavers was also an option, so I'm kind of wondering if these were the Boaty McBoatfaces of their era.

The citation doesn't seem to reference Towers for some reason.

The other bit of useless trivia I know about that expansion and team names is I think the Grizzlies were going to be called the Mounties but it turned out the RCMP had sold their merchandizing rights to Disney and Disney wouldn't allow it.

From an older article:
Mike D"Antoni, coach of the NBA's Houston Rockets, called Casey's firing "laughable":

(P.S.  It's only an opinion)

"I'm not criticizing anyone, everybody has their reasons for making decisions,? D'Antoni said. ?It's just the nature of the business, but it's kind of laughable."

Speaking of the Raptors, make that rumours...

Looks like the rumour mill is churning to the idea of trading Lowry, DeRozan (includes Valenciunas & Ibaka):

Masai Ujiri fired Dwane Casey and is not expected to limit his shakeup to only one move. Of course there?s a better chance DeRozan does return, but Toronto will explore all options, per multiple league sources.

DeRozan, Lowry and Jonas Valanciunas will likely garner the most interest on the market, though Ujiri could look to cut salary in the form of top disappointment Serge Ibaka or Norman Powell, who is about to see his salary take a leap as his extension kicks in.

Congratulations to DeMar DeRozan on being named to the All-NBA second team.

DeMar DeRozan received a big honour on Thursday afternoon, being named to the All-NBA second team.

Only Vince Carter (2001) and Chris Bosh (2007) had previously earned second-team recognition while members of the Raptors. DeRozan (2017) and Kyle Lowry (2016) previously were named to the third team. DeRozan and Carter (third-team, 2000) are now the only Raptors to make multiple All-NBA squads.

So it looks like Bryan Colangelo created a bunch of fake twitter accounts that he then used to defend his job performance(and choice of shirts), criticize other execs(including Ujiri) and dish dirt on players.

Have to admit, that's another notch in the NBA's column for entertainment value.

I am entertained. It is next level pettiness.
