Prior to today at least, probably the best goalie not in the NHL. And a rare elite-level goalie prospect (well he's 24 so sorta past the "prospect" phase). Leads AHL goalies in save percentage and GAA, 2nd in wins (1st place has played 9 more games). Gonna be interesting to see what he can do at the NHL level.

Do we still want Georgiev?

He's a been a perfectly average-ish backup goalie this season, and, if you take away the games against the Leafs last season, he was perfectly average-ish backup against the rest of the league. He's a better long-term option as a backup than what the Leafs currently have, but, I wouldn't give up significant value for him.

They can have Timashov for him.

Torts' completely justified melt-down over last week's whistle incident and the subsequent $20,000 fine the NHL imposed on him is doing some good...a CBJ fan started up a GoFundMe page to help him pay back the fine. He's not allowed to accept it and use it for that purpose, however it's going to be donated to his foundation to help animals in need instead.

The fund is up over $10,000 now, so at least something nice will happen as a result of the NHL being unreasonable.

You know it's cool how this story ends, and I'm going to assume that donations to this GoFundMe have increased after it was made clear that the money would be going to charity, but I really hope that no fan gave up their hard-earned money specifically to "help" Torts pay this fine. Assuming a salary of $2mil (which is what he earned on a previous deal, terms of his newer deals haven't been reported but I'd be surprised if it was less than $2mil) this fine was 0.01% of his salary. Regardless of if the NHL's punishment was warranted or not, he doesn't need financial assistance.

Also just in case people didn't know, the $20k also went to a charity. It's not money the league just pockets or something like that.

I understand why Torts was frustrated.  But I don?t think refs should be worried about 1 second adjustments unless there is an offensive zone face off with 5 seconds to go.  What happened was a remarkable coincidence.  Look, the team had some bad luck. Move on.

As for the goalie being hurt?well, he could have been hurt the first five minutes of the next game.  The injury is not connected.

I agree with the goalie injury not being connected, but I don't agree about the "who cares about the 1 second adjustment" at the tail end of a close game. Imagine if this exact scenario happens at the end of game 7 of our next playoff series with Boston. Do you really think we'd be happy with the ref being cavalier about your team's chance to win the series? It's also something that's done all the time anyway, and with more than just 19 seconds left. It shouldn't be a ref's arbitrary discretion whether or not he can be bothered to ensure that the time is being kept accurately.

We obsess over a tiny fraction of a second when it comes to offsides leading to goals, and we have no trouble doing a quick review to determine if the puck crossed the line before or after the end of a period, it really oughtn't to be very difficult to simply automatically check the time for any/all whistles that occur within the final minute (or final 2 minutes) of every 1-goal game...maybe starting at the same time that automatic goal reviews kick in.

It has been a strange year for NHL goalies. Who would folks have as the top 5 goalies this year?

Bishop
Varlamov
Rask if he can get back on track
Jarry maybe...hard to imagine him winning it but he's kind of making a case for himself
Kuemper...same thing
[note...Jarry and Kuemper are #1 and #2 currently in EVsv%]
Andersen assuming his current little blip gets corrected very soon and he takes the Leafs to the playoffs again
Binnington has been pretty good, too, and might get a lot of consideration since he kind of deserved it last year and didn't win

(EDIT: sorry..that's more than 5)

Almost none who would have made the list if done just a few months ago.

Bishop, Binnington, Andersen, and Rask would have all considered at the start of the season. Kuemper was one of the top goalies in the league last season - he finished 5th in V?zina voting. Really, it?s ont Jarry, whose 19 starts put him in a tie for 32nd most in the league, and Varlamov, a former V?zina runner up playing behind a team whose systems are defensive voodoo, who are real surprises.

Binnington and Kuemper were coming off one good year, I'm not sure many thought they could repeat. Both signed new contracts that don't scream best goalie. Rask had plenty of questions last season.  The list has no Price, Holtby, Vasilisky, Babrovski, Rinne, and so on

Vegas odds going into the season (doesn't necessarily reflect the likely winners...just the line necessary to induce betting action):

Winner Odds
Frederik Andersen (Toronto Maple Leafs) +550
Andrei Vasilevskiy (Tampa Bay Lightning) +600
Ben Bishop (Dallas Stars) +750
Marc-Andre Fleury (Vegas Golden Knights) +1100
Sergei Bobrovsky (Florida Panthers) +1100
Carey Price (Montreal Canadiens) +1500
Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg Jets) +1500
Carter Hart (Philadelphia Flyers) +2000
John Gibson (Anaheim Ducks) +2000
Jordan Binnington (St. Louis Blues) +2000
Martin Jones (San Jose Sharks) +2000
Pekka Rinne (Nashville Predators) +2000
Tuukka Rask (Boston Bruins) +2000
Braden Holtby (Washington Capitals) +2200

That gives Rinne more goals this season than:

Brendan Perlini
Leo Komarov
Mark Jankowski
Justin Abdelkader
Evan Rodrigues
