2019-2020 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Kinda random, but as I was looking at Larsson's stats with Edmonton and Sam Gagner caught my eye and I wonder now if he can be next season's Jason Spezza (I'm assuming this is Jason's swan song).

Gagner leads the team in CF% (52.49) and xGF% (56.77) and is 5th in 5-on-5 points/60 (1.66).

On the flip side his actual GF% is bad (37.93), he still finds himself as a healthy scratch a lot as he's played just 24 of Edmonton's 39 games since being called up, and his actual scoring stats don't look great (2 goals, 9 points).

Still as a guy who can fill the veteran depth scoring role he seems like a really good fit. We know he's had a long-time friendship with Tavares. He's a local-ish guy (London). And he's had familiarity with the Leafs organization after spending 43 games with the Marlies last season. IIRC him and Keefe had a really good relationship there and Gagner's spoken glowingly about Keefe in the time since.

Just a little thing to keep an eye on when this summer rolls around.

My love for Nylander is at hermanesque proportions, but I don't think we need to exaggerate. Nylander's not a great bargain. He's on pace for a 70+ point season, which is great, but he's getting paid $7M/year. I'd expect that kind of production (or at least high 60s) for $7M.

His contract is what I always thought it was: a good deal for both team and player. It was the RIGHT contract.

This is admittedly a very basic way of looking at it but Nylander has the 44th highest AAV among forwards this season. In scoring he's 27th among forwards in points and 12th in goals.

Saying he's one of the best bargains in the league is maybe pushing it, but I think he's definitely outperforming his contract this season.

I'm also projecting forward. I think Nylander still has some runway for improvement, as well I don't think just using his counting stats are the most illustrative of his value. I probably overstated in terms of best bargains group in the league but I do think that he's great value at his contract and it would be insane to just ignore that element when trading him. I don't see any of the names suggested in trade as either getting a bargain player or a player with significant runway for improvement, so why are trading Nylander when we aren't getting someone of equal value at D?

For sure. Dubas isn't trading him for anything less than a similarity aged top-pairing defenceman and generally speaking those trades don't happen.

For all intents and purposes Nylander is virtually untouchable right now.

I like how people are finally starting to calm the waters on Georgiev.  I feel the Rangers either don't move him now, or they get way less than they hoped for.

This season, yes, but he also cost the Leafs $7M last year.

I approve this message. I've always liked Gagner and felt that he's had some bad luck in the teams he was on and how he was used during his career. He definitely has a lot of the elements that would make him a decent Spezza replacement. I seem to remember Keefe having lots of positive things to say about his work ethic and general attitude when he was playing with the Marlies for half of last year. As an added bonus he's a natural center which is an area where we could use some more depth.

has Spezza ruled out the possibility of coming back or is he retiring?

I haven't seen any quotes of him saying anything one way or the other. I suppose he could turn into a Marleau/Thronton type of player who sees how he's feeling in the summer and whether he's up for another season at ~ min wage. He's been a great fit for us this year and I could see him still being good for another year or two as long as he doesn't get any slower than he is right now.

Pass on Gagner if Spezza is coming back. Even if he isn't we need better. Here are a few stats that are all I need. He's 42% on the draw. Spezza is 54% and he's at 1 point per 60 less then Spezza and over 4 points per 60 in PP time. If JS can keep putting up similar numbers, keep him around.

In context of the returns for goalies over the last couple years, they're going to get a reasonable return for him if they move him. Something like a 3rd round pick, maybe even a 2nd. More likely, he'll be part of a bigger package. He's not bringing in huge value on his own, but he definitely has value in a deal.

No he isn't. All this task of Kappy or Johnsson plus for him from Dreger is rubbish

We'll be getting a b/u from NYR all right, but not Georgiev.  Hint: there will be mucho salary retention from the Rags.

Rags can't retain enough salary for the Leafs to make that work without moving substantial salary out.

Also, that goalie will never play for another organization. He'll retire having only played for one team. He wants to stay, he has the control, and the team isn't going to pressure him to move.

Heh, that's what he says in public.  :) :) :P

when is Mikheyev due to come back?

Ages.

They said at least 3 months until he could even put any pressure on the muscles/tendons and I'd assume it will take longer to get the strength and touch back. It's probably a bit of a long shot to see him in game shape before the end of the regular season and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he wasn't ready until later in the 1st round (if the Leafs make it)

I see Kapanen was at practice today, did the team give any update on what happened?
Wanted to be first in line at the after game meal? Only heard x rays were negative and he was there eating.

How did Florida get the schedule that they got?  The last played a week ago, and they don't play again till Saturday.  They already have a game at hand on the Leafs.

It'll catch up to them. All Star break + their 5 day mandatory break is the reason for their layoff. Leafs had a similar break Jan 18-27
