2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

From the nominally free pile: Seth Griffith szn 3.0! If Josh Ho-Sang weren't overseas at the moment, I'd inquire. Ennis would be nice to see again.

Which one is more rare? shutdown centre or top-6 complementary winger? Because Kerfoot can move up. Can't see why Nic Petan or Kenny Agostino can't be given a whirl essentially for free.

You make a good point but the Leafs might be thinking long term for Kerfoot who I think has done a pretty good job so far in his shutdown role. He's only been on the ice for 1 EVS Goal Against and is 52% on draws this season...Maholtra influence here.
So if you have Kerfoot moving up, where is Vesey going? 4th line?

Nylander - Matthews - Marner
Vesey - Tavares - Kerfoot
Mikheyev - Shutdown - Hyman

Alternatively

Matthews - Tavares - Marner
Vesey - Kerfoot - Nylander (sheltered)
Mikheyev - Shutdown - Hyman (DZ)

If we get a cheap-goodish winger

Goodish - Matthews - Marner
Vesey - Tavares - Nylander (sheltered)
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Hyman

Yeah I don't think you're getting another shutdown C at this point in the season. If the Leafs are shopping for a forward it's to replace Thornton, who would have been replaced by Robertson, so they can go back to their original roster configurations.

Does anyone know if Robertson stay on the taxi squad if/when the OHL gets started?

Unless the NHL and CHL decides to grant some exemptions, I believe the expectation right now would be Robertson could not go on the taxi squad (or the AHL obviously) once (if?) the OHL season gets underway.

Good find. I deleted my post.. I was thinking Robertson can stay because he's on the team, forgetting that getting sent to the squad is essentially the AHL. That's going to be an interesting scenario when the OHL opens up Feb 4 and Robertson comes off LTIR.

The Feb. 4th date was scrapped late in December when the province went back into lockdown. Who knows if/when the season will start at this point.

Well now it won't be so interesting for a bit then. Maybe never.

Yeah, given there's little to no revenue other than the door in the OHL, I very much doubt there's going to be a season at all at this point going into February in a week.  I think they may have been a little optimistic.

Yeah it's getting hard to see how they could do anything resembling a season. If they could pull the logistics off something like a month long tournament set-up would be interesting, if only just to get the kids some playing time. But in that case the NHL would need to put their foot down and say guys like Robertson can remain on taxi squads.

They're gonna need to do something for the draft eligible guys. Whether it's a tournament, a series of prospect games, or somethign else.

The Thornton-Matthews-Marner and Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Hyman lines show up here for the Leafs. Both these lines were going up against the other teams top-2 lines as well. It's unfortunate that Thornton's injury likely means the end of both of them for awhile.

I think I heard on the radio that there were rumblings that the NHL may raise the draft age to 19 starting this year.  Not sure if that would help or hurt long term though.

How would that even go down? Basically this year's draft wouldn't happen as most of the players that would have been drafted at 19 this year, were drafted last year at 18 years old.
So what we'd get is Rounds 8 through 14 with a couple players that may have slipped through the cracks......But, there's been no real hockey...so...

I?m pretty sure draft eligibility is defined in the CBA, and changing it would require the PA to sign off. There?s been speculation about the league potentially raising that in the next round of renegotiations, but I don?t believe they can unilaterally change it.

I'm not sure I'd even see it as a huge help for teams. At best you'd maybe get a slight edge in figuring out which guys were busts but it's not like an extra year in junior at 19 would expose a lot of guys. It's also not like the NBA where another year in college exposes them to a lot more media and makes them bigger stars.

Skipping this year's draft and moving all traded picks forward a year would be the only way to make it work, and with the lack of junior hockey this year, now would be the best time to make that kind of change. That way, next year's draft would be based on the talent pool that would currently be available for this year's, and so on. You wouldn't be adding any extra rounds worth of prospects or anything like that. In fact, you'd lose some, as a full year of 20 y/o players would age out of the draft.

I still don't see it happening. As Nik says, it doesn't do much for the teams - I'd argue that, in fact, it makes it a little harder to judge the talent, as the extra year of physical development can make junior players stand out more than they would otherwise - and I'm not sure it helps the NHLPA, either.  Not sure why they'd agree to it without getting something significant they want from the league, and that probably kills the whole concept.

Yes, I suppose backing it up a year may work. As other posters have said, I'm not sure what it benefits.

I don't either, which is why I don't see it happening. Not enough value for the league or the players.
