2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I'm not sure if raising the draft age is something they're actually talking about. On Saturday Headlines Johnson and Friedman talked about draft plans and didn't mention it at all. Friedman said the draft could possibly be moved back to maybe December/January or a more extreme possibility would be doing two drafts in June 2022, one for each class.

Can we have two trade deadlines?  One for players crossing the border and a second one for players staying in their bubble border?  Come on, we could have 30 4th liners traded for a 3rd-7th pick that way.

We're essentially going to have that any way. Any significant moves are going to happen well before the deadline, I imagine. The actual deadline will basically be reserved for pure depth/injury insurance type moves.

Quick question, very CBA but also very fun and unlikely:

Provided we had the cap space to pull this off, if we trade for Phil Kessel, does that retained salary get 'reabsorbed' into his contract, to be perhaps traded again before his deal expires next season?

I do kind of want to see Thornton - Kessel on a line...

I don't believe the retention and the remainder of the contract can be merged, no - but I can't find anything specific about that in the CBA.

I seem to recall Mirtle being asked this once and yeah the answer was a pretty hard no.

Yeah. In general, if the CBA has specific language around something and doesn't include a provision around this, the answer is that it's not an available option to teams. This isn't like the contract length loophole. There would need to be specific provisions around reintegrating retained salary, especially in regard to the player being potentially traded away from the team that retained salary after being reacquired.

Tyler Ennis has cleared waivers.

Good.  I liked Ennis when he was here with the team but I don't think he was what this roster needed. It's only 1M but every extra dollar against the cap should be used for players who make the team explicitly better and I don't see how he plays on the roster with a full completement.  I would rather see Anderson get a chance over Ennis coming back.

Should have held onto Dell :(
Is what it is. The Leafs have some flexibility in the line up without Dell. No one can foresee injuries. Let's hope Freddie doesn't get hurt or Woll is Ken Dryden lol.

I'm kinda liking the structure of this season, 2 games v Edmonton, then 2 v Calgary, 2 more v Edmonton again, 3 v Vancouver coming up.

Not sure if I'd buy into it long term but it's fun for something different.

It's alot more like a baseball schedule this season.  Especially the 3 game series coming up against Vacnouver, that will be weird.
