2021 Offseason Moves

https://twitter.com/BuffaloSabres/status/1418989488001495045

Hmmm don't like this (from the perspective of a team in Florida's division).

Makar's closest historical comparables for defencemen signing big post-ELC contracts are Doughty, Karlsson, and Ekblad. Doughty got a 8-years deal at $7mil (10.89% CH%). Karlsson got 7 years at $$6.5mil (10.11%). Ekblad got 8 years at $7.5mil (10.27%). Makar's contract came in at 6 years, so less than all of those guys, and had a higher cap hit percentage at 11.04%.

I think he's worth every single penny, but this is a historically massive contract for a defenceman coming off his ELC.

Tampa gets a full year of Kucherov but takes a big hit in their depth.

Florida has gotten better (replacing Driedger with Knight isn?t a downgrade)

Boston isn?t a world beater but depending on how they round out their lineup they are still a solid team.  I think that?s a pretty big problem

Ottawa should get better with development

Montreal I honestly don?t know but they don?t feel like a good team still

Buffalo and Detroit are still going to be free points.

Do we even get home ice in the first round.  I?m not so sure

Driedger had the 4th best save percentage in the league last season. I don't think he's going to repeat that of course but that was a massive reason for Florida's success last season. Even if Knight has a good season he's almost certainly not going to match that level, so their goaltending will likely be worse.

This one is weird to gage for me.  I think Voracek is a huge upgrade talent wise.  But Atkinson was Columbus's heart and soul, so who knows how that disrupts the locker room.

I saw this list somewhere else, players that have moved on since they swept the lightning:

Sergei Bobrovksy
Artemi Panarin
Nick Foligno
David Savard
Ryan Murray
Marcus Nutivaara
Pierre Luc-Dubois
Alexander Wennberg
Josh Anderson
Seth Jones
Cam Atkinson

Foligno won't be going back to CBJ....Leafs or Minny

It's not as big an upgrade as it feels. Atkinson is a ~20 goal, ~50pt forward. Voracek is a ~20 goal, ~60pt forward with a cap hit that's almost $2.5M more per season. Philly needed the extra cap space, and does it without losing a tone of production. Columbus gets a more dynamic piece, and don't have any serious cap concerns.

A number of interesting forwards are about to become UFAs as a result of not receiving a qualifying offer:

Danton Heinen
David Kampf
Pius Suter
Ondrej Kase
Nick Ritchie
Mark Jankowski
Ryan Donato

Pius Suter is on my radar. A Centre that put up 27 pts last season with the Hawks. 3rd line centre??? I also love his name..My grandfather's name was Pius. Ritchie spark my interest.

Ritchie or Kase are interesting.

Kase had a couple of productive seasons in Anaheim before not doing anything with Boston

Not-Carolina Svechnikov also wasn't qualified.
