2021 Offseason Moves

I feel bad for Bogo. Instead of re-signing with the Lightning and winning another Cup he chose the Leafs and ended up being separated from his family all season long. Gotta think that really hurt him mentally. He likely turned down a ton more money (especially in this market) to go to where he wanted.

Damn it.  Really wanted to see Bogo back.

I would have done this, too bad.

I'm actually baffled Bonino went this route. Surely he could have gotten better offers from much better teams.

It was out there weeks ago he wouldn't sign in Canada. Good guy, wish him well.

If he and his agent thought there wouldn't be challenges living in another country during a pandemic then I don't really feel that bad honestly.

Yup.

I know good accounting can fix some of the tax stuff but that discrepany needs to be fixed in the next CBA.

First off, I really doubt the "good accounting can neutralize Florida's tax advantage" stories for a few reasons but more to the point, there is no way to "fix" this because every team can make an argument that other teams have some sort of financial advantage when it comes to luring players. Small market teams can say big market teams can use endorsement dollars, big market teams can say small market teams have lower costs of living. American teams can say Canadian teams can use the currency difference to their advantage and so on and so forth.

The only way to "fix" it is by getting rid of the hard cap.

I think we are on the same page.  I want the hard cap gone.  I want a Bird Rights clause (even if it's limited to 1 player in more of an NFL style franchise player tag) and I want a soft cap.

I get that we agree in principle about the cap, I was more saying that there's no way to address the tax issue independently of the cap, which they won't.

I think the tax stuff is overblown anyway. You don't see the Panthers really getting similar breaks on their deals.

Well, you haven't yet, in large part because the Panthers haven't really been faced with similar circumstances.

Do I need to keep repeating myself re: Holl?

Maybe I'm just biased because I despised Ceci even when he was with the Sens.  I hated him here even more.  That contract is absolutely ridiculous.

I guess Edmonton loves their mediocre RHD after Larsson moved on to the Kraken.

My considered position is that Ceci and whoever those other D guys who signed today are, all of them, Holl included, are overrated.  :P
