Opening up a little flexibility for the trade deadline.
Leafs will have just over 2M with Murray back.

More about being to easily open up a roster spot than the cap space. And, if he gets picked up, also means the team doesn?t have to move out equal contracts in any deal.

Rosters are unlimited after the deadline.

After, yes. There?s still almost a week until then, and the limit is very much in place when trades are being made.

Unlimited after the deadline??  I thought it was at the end of the season for the playoffs.  Does the cap still apply after the deadline?

Cap counts until playoffs. Rosters expanded after deadline. Moving Benn gives them cap room and a roster spot. If he gets claimed they gain a contract so it would mean they don't have to do the one in one out scenario. They only have 1 contract available now and it's pretty much there for Knies.

I'd be a little surprised if the Benn waivers thing was just a matter of opening up a roster spot/cap room without a corresponding move at least somewhat brewing. Risking Anderson on waivers isn't that big of a deal with comprable players like Holmberg, McMann, and Steeves behind him on the depth chart. Risking Benn though with basically no capable NHL defencemen behind him at the #8D spot is another story. Especially since he'd potentially represent the next defenceman up over Timmins if a defensive defenceman goes out of the line-up.

This makes sense to me.  Schenn's a-comin' home.  He's the perfect insurance policy.

I hope what's brewing is a trade package for Chychrun with retention...just saying.

I am concerned that Sandin is playing better than last year but still gets outmuscled in playoff style games this season.

I hope we can do better, even if it costs Knies. With muzzin done, I'd like to see a higher end replacement with term you can use both now and in future years. But you may be right.

Benn/Schenn same kind of thing IMO. One doesn't cost you an asset and both are 7th on the depth chart.

I guess, but I also suspect you?ll see a number of Benn level defenceman on waivers over the next few days. If he gets claimed and the Leafs don?t have a trade lined up, they should be able to claim a replacement fairly easily.

Benn cleared

Depth is really only as relevant as how deep this team goes but this is phenomenal.  Good depth who provides they different element of injuries hit against tougher teams

Obviously things can still change this week but here's a short run down of the arms race in the East

Boston: + Dmitry Orlov, Garnet Hathaway | - Craig Smith
Toronto: + Ryan O'Reilly, Noel Acciari | - Adam Gaudette, Mikhail Abramov
Tampa Bay: + Tanner Jeannot | - Cal Foote

Carolina Hurricanes:
New Jersey Devils: + Timio Meier, Scott Harrington | - Andreas Johnsson, Fabian Zetterlund, Shakir Mukhamadullin
New York Rangers: + Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrick Kane (Friday probably) | - Sammy Blais

Patrick Kane is a shoe just waiting for cap space accumulation to drop. Jakob Chychrun is really the only big ticket left, barring an out-of-left-field trade for a player with more term. JT Miller's name is out there now as well but he is a depressed asset.

There's nothing really left, especially at forward, for a team like Carolina to make a big move for. They were the one contender that was going into the deadline with oodles of cap space too (thanks to Pacioretty going on LTIR). JVR maybe? Could also see them being a good fit for Jakub Vrana if it's true that Detroit is looking to move him.

Nothing obvious, but I suspect there's going to be a few guys moving that will catch us off guard, and one is likely land with the Canes.

For instance, I can easily see them picking up someone like Granlund from the Preds now that Nashville seems to have thrown in the towel.

Think they can fit JT Miller in?

I think it would be fun if Carolina went after Erik Karlsson.

Lots of D still to move, but there are fewer seats in that game of musical chairs and I think GMs are waiting for prices to come down on Friday. Toronto should be picking one up.
