2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Meanwhile in the postgame discussion they floated the idea of scratching Liljegren to put Holl back in.....no.

Kind of interesting. The pairing of Liljegren-Sandin are second in the NHL in expected goals for %:

They were very high up on those lists as a pair together last season as well. It's promising, although it should be noted the 5 forwards they play with the most often are Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, and Bunting. There's probably not a pairing in the league that gets more sheltered minutes and with better teammates.

Yeah, and I think I'm ok with that. Shelter them, Leave them as the 3rd pair in the playoffs.

Leafs should focus on getting someone to play with either Rielly or Giordano if they make a move, or go with Holl. No Timmins in the playoffs unless injury replacement.

Hey Timmins I thought you had a good game....Keefe says nope you come back out of the lineup

I think he sent his message to Holl.  Timmins is most certainly the 7th guy at this point, so I'm not too upset that he's the one sitting.

If they're going to make any noise in the playoffs, they're going to need Holl to be good-defense-Holl.

We've talked in seasons past about the Leafs not getting the sexiest player at the deadline...this year it has to be Meier at this point, right?

No. What team grabbed to best guy available and won it all? Seriously asking because I don't remember when it happened. Col picked up good depth players last season. TBay has done it for years. Leafs can't empty the chamber on 1 guy. If they can grab a couple of guys like Barbashev and Jeannot up front they might be better off. If the price is right though you def don't shy away from guys like Meier and Kane, you just can't afford to overpay.

Definitely the message was sent to Holl. Funny thing for all the complaining about him I decided to look at some stats.
Turns out Holl is actually very good on the PK. Holl is 9th in the league for PK time per game average. He's  7th in the league in total PK time on ice and tied for 60th in PP goals against. Of the top 50 PK time on ice D men, he's 3rd in PP goals against per 60 mins.

I really hope Dubas does something significant in the next two weeks to alter the direction of this team come playoff time.

Dubas is a smart hockey executive. At what point does he realize the limited number of kicks at the can he has left with this high end group of players.

I will be sorely disappointed if we don?t see the biggest push we?ve seen under his tenure in order to do whatever it takes to actually win in the playoffs. The time to stockpile picks and prospects is out the window. He needs to trade whatever he can for a legitimate star player or group of players, either on the backend or upfront to push this team that final step forward. Just shuffling around the deck chairs like he has the past bunch of trade deadlines hasn?t moved the needle at all. I would assume he realizes this and that this year is the year we see some adaptation to the notion that he can't just tinker along the fringes and expect better results. Particularly in the division the Leafs are in.

Come the deadline in March, if this is basically the same team with some minor tweaks heading to face off against the Lightning in the 1st round, I'll have been sadly misjudging his abilities to eventually ice a playoff winning team.

Call me ?not? sorely disappointed, and even a little surprised with how well Dubas pulled the ROR deal off.

      right... I lov it.

Can't help but wonder if Luke Schenn is someone who could help on the backend come playoff time?

He's a punishing d-man that we are lacking. Would come relatively cheap.

Would he be an improvement on our D?

I think the question for him is who does he push out? Holl? Sandin? I like Schenn for depth, but not sure he really improves the top 6 much.

Yeah. Other than bringing some physical play, I'm not sure he adds much. He's be an upgrade on Benn, but, other than that, he'd probably be 7th or 8th on the depth chart.

Schenn doesn't move the needle enough for me. He'd be good as a reserve guy though. Yes he hits and all that but he also takes himself out of the play a lot by doing so. Look at Lybushkin last year. Loved the hits but he was our worst defender. Now if they went and got Mayfield, then we're talking.

Can't imagine Mayfield is available with the Islanders holding in the thick of - and currently leading - the wildcard race

I don't see him being available either although he's a ufa. Islanders have played more games then the ones chasing them so I think they're in trouble. Add in that Barzal is out also.

Luke Schenn scratched tonight for trade-related purposes.

Don't tell me he's coming to the Leafs again?

That's all true, but there aren't enough games between now and the trade deadline to significantly impact their approach. After the Horvat deal, they're gonna do everything in their power to make the playoffs.
