First player this season to pot 20; it wasn't pretty for a stretch after the double hat trick start, but there's a more concerted effort to just put pucks on the net lately.

Keefe mentioned in previous seasons he prefers to keep Matthews and Nylander apart because they both 'need' the puck on their stick, but I think the two of them know each other well enough and read the game well enough that they just take turns based on what the situation requires. They're both such threats with the puck that the other can easily get lost in the coverage.

With Marner, defenses in the playoffs that just been blanketing Matthews and pushing Marner to the perimeter. Try that against Nylander and he walks his check and takes it into the net himself.

Liljegren started skating again on Dec. 3rd, and has been participating in full practices since Dec. 9th. So should be seeing him pretty soon. If not this Saturday then next week Tuesday feels likely.

it's fun to watch the other 5 crash one half of the ice so Matthews gets clear looks.

Good he is not badly injured and I mean that. I hate to see players go out that way.  However it does open the door for probably a week or two of McMann or Steeves etc. to make a case to hold down the spot.

I wonder if Holmgren is up because they might give him another look at center ...

At first glance I took those D pairings to mean that Benoit is probably just a place holder for Brodie who could still be ready to play tomorrow, but it's also entirely possible that Lagesson is the place holder instead and Benoit could get a legit chance to play alongside Rielly in the Lyubushkin/Schenn role.

I said this in the gameday thread but I?m really impressed with Benoit. No points at all and he?s a +5. He?s snarky, he?s clearing the net and he?s only 25.

I don?t see how someone like Lyubushkin would be an upgrade over him.

He's been quietly good.  I've been joking about getting a Benoit sweater, but he's the snarky physical Dman this team has needed.

MLHS has an interesting article today that argues Benoit/Lagesson have nearly proved they are hole-fillers needed at 5/6/7.  What's needed on D is a top 4 RH guy.  They take a kind of backhanded swipe at Liljegren, saying he could be / should have been THAT guy, but at 24 with only 152 NHL games under his belt ...

To which I'd reply, remember that the Leafs kept him on the Marlies intentionally for a long time (a la Detroit of yore).  Maybe he still can be THAT guy.  But the next year or two will tell.  If he's going to step up and become a 1st rounder success story, he needs to do it soon.
