And the thing is he is almost always not in an ideal position which is 100% his own making. He tried swiping the pass coming from behind the net but missed and wasn't at all square to the shooter in front. He's not positionally sound.

I saw it mentioned elsewhere and it?s an intriguing enough idea, but I would be tempted to see what offers are out there for Domi and Bertuzzi.

I actually think we can still make the playoffs without them. Once we?re there who knows what can happen.

I don?t think we win a cup this season with or without them. So I don?t think we should be selling assets such as our own picks or prospects to boost our chances by 1% or something.

Maybe we can bring back some almost ready prospects and/or decent draft picks to replenish our emptying cupboards. Or some defensive or goalie pieces.

I could maybe see a Domi trade if it was to bring in a 3C that Keefe would actually play, or in a side deal to make cap space for that player. I can't see him being traded for picks with no plan to replace his spot in the line-up.

I think that could be linked to a new coach/Nylander at centre?

I don?t think they?d trade both Domi and Bertuzzi, but, I think there?s an argument to do so.

Of course, if Nylander isn?t signed maybe he becomes a trade potential.
as long as they don't fall off a cliff, none of the mentioned is going anywhere. They were brought in for the playoffs and you're not dumping arguably your 2nd best forward..

Yeah, don?t get me wrong, I don?t really see it ACTUALLY happening, but I can see merit in why it could or even should.

Samsonov on waivers

Not unexpected.  Something had to give.

He'll likely clear and go down to the Marlies to hopefully regain some confidence.  Just like the Oilers did with Campbell.  Or, he just may toil in obscurity.

Luke Cavallin called up from the Growlers to the Marlies, so we will likely see one of Petruzzelli or Hildeby up to back up Jones in a corresponding move.

I wish him the best.. confidence is such a big part of a goalie's game... he had a good season last year..

I think it was fine give it another game past Christmas to see if the short break had something click but this has to happen.  I'm glad the organization didn't drag their feet longer.

Samsonov needs to play in the AHl to see if he can get himself sorted out so I'm actually even more in favour of Hildebrand getting a taste of NHL life.  Even if he sits, getting NHL coaching and facing practice shots might be valuable

Maybe I?m getting soft in my old age. I know he?s earning a lot of money, but I do feel for him.

I?ve only ever played mid level amateur sport, but when you get in such a funk you feel like you?ve literally forgotten how to play and the confidence and form is completely gone it?s a horrible place to be.

I can only imagine it feels even worse when it?s your job and you?ve tens of thousands of people watching you fail.

Absolutely not. He can't come here and sit. Goalies need to play. Petruzzelli was on a roll last year until he got the call. Never got in a game with the Leafs and couldn't find his game when he went back to the Marlies.

Had to happen but I also hope Samsonov can get straightened out - both for his sake and the teams.

I'm hoping they bring up Hildeby. Seems like an almost ideal time - road game against a weak opponent. Then take it from there. If he gets shelled he goes right back down. If not, maybe some time working with the Leaf staff and facing NHL players in practice would be good for his development. Maybe it turns out he is already better than Jones and is one of those rare young goalies who can handle the league.

I haven't been impressed with Petruzelli whenever I've seen him play. It's probably the safer choice to bring him up though.

Lets stop treating Hildeby like he is a glass to be broken.  If you read about the guy, he is a cool as a cucumber.  Plays a similar style to Woll, squares up, great glove and athletic when he needs to be.

Just hope that Toskala can fit Samsonov into his goalie training camp in Helsinki. Class 101,  "How to stop a beach ball.

I presume Samsonov turned down conditioning in AHL
Hoping for a change of scenery in the NHL?
Seemed like a nice guy
Sad situation and probably expensive for him personally

A conditioning stint would have put the Leafs in a tough spot in terms of roster and cap space with no real benefit vs waivers, and I'm not even sure the league would have looked at it approvingly. Him going on waivers has been inevitable for a little while now.

Don't know who you're referring to but I've seen him play plenty. I'm a big fan and think he can be part of the future. I'm not opposed to bringing him up to play.I'm opposed to him coming up to be a backup and sit on the bench like Petruzzelli last year. The good thing is there's a B2B situation so there should be at least 1 start in this 3 game trip.

LeafsPR probably could have just cut out the middle men on this one.

I am not sure where the line is on LeafsPR material vs Media Group Chat chatter. I guess anything that needs to be documented (contracts, statistical milestones, etc) get PR tweeted and the rest is grist.

Woll is eligible for LTIR as of today. There's your (edit) cap space.
Reaves is eligible for LTIR as of Jan 6th - if Woll is close to returning.
Holmberg could go down for a game or so if needed.
AHL conditioning is max 14 days.
So they didn't "have" to waive him for roster and cap space reasons at this particular moment.

If Edmonton or someone picks him up and Jones gets hurt ... how's U of T goaltending this year? Because aside from Hildeby, there's not a lot of impressive depth at this juncture.

Granted that it was inevitable because when Woll returns one of Jones or Samsonov would probably have to go on waivers. In saying that, I presume Jones emergency call up doesn't cover for him any more. As I mentioned before, Jones is more likely to be picked up off waivers. Canes could snatch him to replace Raanta - maybe the only NHL goalie statistically worse than Samsonov for example - no brainer.
