2023 Offseason Trades & Signings

Makes it seem like he'll probably go his whole career just playing for the team who drafted him. Don't see that a ton these days and especially not for guys who are maybe just a notch below that superstar level.

Maybe it's just semantics around superstar but he seems like he's pretty close to that level when you factor in how good of a defensive player he has been.  He will likely end up with 450+ goals and has a chance to have 1300 points.  He's probably going to be Top 30 in all time scoring (and will drop back down a number of spots over the next 20 years) when he wraps up his career.

Zero end of year all-star teams, One top 5 Hart voting season. Great player and HOFer for sure but you know, like I said, a notch below that top of the top level.

What's crazy is that Detroit can add a player this good and for a relatively low return and still look like a team that'll probably miss the playoffs for an 8th straight season.

Dermott not being able to secure a 1-way deal is a big ooof (granted his two-way salary is pretty high for that). He also had some injury problems last year so that likely played a role. Maybe him and Durzi can be a pairing in the desert.

I think people massively underestimate the average time it takes to rebuild through the draft. Many people talk about a 3-4 year rebuild as a significant rebuild time. But outside of generational talents, a drafted player doesn?t even join the team in their first year. Outside the top of the first round, we are usually talking 3rd year. It takes a 2-3 years after joining to make an outsized impact. So in 4-5 years, you?ve got perhaps 2 players making a significant impact and 2-4 players making a minor impact if you?ve gotten lucky with the lottery and your picks. That?s 1/5 - 1/4 of your team.

I would really like the NHL to change some rules to allow greater player movement to accelerate such rebuilds or facilitate rebuilds on the fly. We need a softer or more flexible cap system (and perhaps sooner free agency and shorter contract lengths).  And apart from rebuilds, player movement is just good for fans. It is fun to get a new player and explore how they fit in with your team.

But of course, the nhl doesn?t seem to care as much about making the sport fun for the fans as it does ensuring fixed and minimal ownership costs.

Also, as a side note, this is a hilarious tweet. Obviously it would be an off-ice issue that would prompt this because nothing possibly could have happened on-ice since they signed him(and you do your medical due dilligence before signing a player). So this reporter tweeted that an anonymous source said an unspecific thing that we all already knew.
