2024-25 General Trades and Signings

I think a lot of Leafs fans are in the same mindset right now. I've hoped and watched this team for so long now, i'm just numb to anything at this point. "Build through the draft!", "sign free agents!", "make a huge trade!", nothing has ever worked out for this team (in the ultimate "Worked out" sense of at LEAST making the Cup Finals) So I don't really care what the direction is, as long as I get to see a damn Cup before I die.
That we can all agree on.

I think the one thing I will say is how I watch the team has changed. I don't care as much about the playoffs because the team consistently lets us down. So given that we come from a position of being inept in the postseason I'd rather watch a good regular season team that loses in the playoffs than a mediocre one that also loses in the playoffs. I don't expect the team to win because they don't

I also can't really believe that we are remotely concerned about losing either of Cowan or Minten. Minten is a future 3rd line centre. Cowan had a breakout season last year and point streak aside has had disappointing production this year after also having a disappointing training camp and didn't have a great World Junior tournament. Cowan has 53 points in 40 games playing in his draft plus 2 season.

None of our prospects are players I'm concerned about losing.

Personally I'm not afraid of trading our picks or prospects, but I'd much rather have a Jake McCabe type deal than a Brock Nelson type deal.

Beauvillier was a guy I thought could be a decent plan D or E option if we couldn't get any centres or defencemen and just wanted to throw a mid round pick at a scoring depth option. Guess I was wrong.

Going to need to see all the details, but, right now, they're trading a decent young D and Norris for a younger Norris.
JBD is very much a run of the mill defenceman and even calling him young at this point is pushing it. I just think Cozens finding his game is way more likely than Norris doing so.

He's a 24 y/o RHD. 24 is still young for a blueliner who isn't an elite guy. He's improved quite significantly this year into a guy that can potentially be a 2nd pairing guy. He has more value than you're giving him.

At this point, if feels like Cozens' ceiling is basically what Norris is now.

My guess is Cozen can shoulder some of the grit and steer some shenanigans away from Brady. Norris is a decent hitter too, seems like a change for the sake of change trade. Cozens has been a lot healthier then Norris.

Honestly it’s like people who still lose their shit over boyes and mccauley for Nolan. I do that trade over every time.

He has 4 points this season, doesn't kill penalties, doesn't get powerplay time, and averages 13:06 ice-time per game which puts him 208th among the 218 defenceman to play at least 25 games this season. He's averaging almost 3 minutes per game less than he did in the past 2 seasons. Sure his on-ice numbers are kinda fine but not enough to really make it seem like he's anything more than he is right now.

Regardless of JBD though the Cozens and Norris swap will definitely be interesting to keep an eye on over the next year or so. Could "fix" both players, could help one, might not make a difference to either. Guess we'll see.
