2024 Offseason Thread: Changes

If Marner goes to Treliving on July 1st and says he's willing to sign an identical extension to Nylander's (8 years, $11.5mil), do you do it?

Two things

Only way I trade Marner is if Chicago wins the draft lottery and we
trade him for the #1 overall Celebrini, I'm sure Marner would wave to
go play with Bedard

Extend Tavares with a 4M x 2 years and get his buddy Stamkos here on a
4M x 3 years and they can retire together

It's definitely tough not to. If he says I won't trade and I'll just play out my last year of my contract instead then how can you not? Losing Marner for nothing for cap space when Tavares comes off the books a year later isn't great, although I'd argue he's definitely not worth $11.5. Maybe if the Leafs fail to make the playoffs or lose in the first round he has to tender a 20 team no trade list?

William Nylander demonstrating his defensive acumen, hitting up all three of Aristotle?s persuasive appeals in one soundbyte.

The fact that they're aware of what's being said sits with me kind of weird. They're supposed to be above this and beyond this. Nobody would say "Oh damn, we love Willy, we know everyone's a whipping boy sometimes, but we love him?" No, he just plays his game and moves on. Marner is too fragile for this market.

I guess I am looking at it in a basic way with someone like Brind'Amour available. But I guess if he appealed they could still be reaching out to him given his contract status with a view to a future agreement (unless it is presently too early and could be considered tampering).

Until Carolina is eliminated, Brind'Amour is not available. He's under contract until July 1, officially, so, any discussions with him that Carolina doesn't say yes to - and they wouldn't while the team is still playing - would be tampering, yes.

Good point. Given the negotiation position has become public I'd completely disregarded the fact that Carolina's season is still in progress.

A ridiculously team friendly contract extension for Tavares on July 1st would be a nice way to start the offseason.

What amount would you consider that? $3 million a season?

I think I'd be be comfortable upwards of 3 years, $5 million per, at most.

Yeah I think either prior to this season or early into this season I pegged Tavares' extension to be under $7mil but over $5mil. That range has certainly decreased after finishing with just 65 points this season, especially with the opportunities he of course had.

Considering all the circumstances like his dropping production and slower play, and the state of the team and lack of success, and the fact that Tavares almost certainly wants to finish his career in Toronto I think we're probably looking at something like $5mil or less right now. Maybe a $9.1mil extension over 2-years ($4.55mil AAV) or 3-years ($3.033mil AAV) is the best case scenario.

He's a good grinder but he's become so slow. I'd take him probably as a $4m winger but really that's all I'd do.

Yeah 5 mill is too rich in my mind. 3 sounds better. And as you say, winger. But also, let him play this last year out and see first.

Is a rapidly slowing down John Tavares a guy we necessarily want on the wing.  I know he still is a decent player but I might want to see what he looks like in the year and do a mid-season extension rather than committing and finding out he's now a 40 point player.  He's not good enough defensively and doesn't really play physical to be the grinder kind of forward at 5M

Obviously the offensive production wasn't there in the playoffs and that's unacceptable for someone making $11mil but I do give Tavares credit for playing probably the best defensive hockey of his Leafs-career against Boston. That's a part of his game that seemingly got worse over the past 6 years, which is a shame since he was a decent two-way guy with the Islanders IIRC. At the very least he was starting to play a regular role on their PK before he left and that's something no Leafs coach has ever attempted here, which always somewhat surprised me considering his face-off numbers and just the general lack of centres we've had to utilize on the PK over the years.

With Tavares at a bit of a cross roads in his career could a new coach potentially get him to put a new emphasis on playing a 200-foot, defensive style of hockey at the expense of some points in a 3C role? We know the effort level from JT is always there, maybe he just needs to focus it more on the other side of the game now.
That might be the best way for him to continue bringing value to the Leafs during the last third/quarter of his career.

JVR 2.0 + he's decent on the faceoffs.

No not a chance. His time in TO should be done. If he doesn't want to waive screw him. Overpaid now the way I look at it. Let's not keep making the same mistake. Guys are paid handsomely and not to just produce in the regular season. Obvious he can't elevate his game when it really matters and he's not the only one mind you but something needs to change and unfortunately it'll probably be him.

You're not getting Celebrini for Marner.

🍿

Guessing coaching change this summer and Shanahan out in 12 months if that doesn't fix things.
Coaching change might be by next week if Keefe is fired Friday. Can't wait forever to hire a guy when teams are looking. Kings, Blues, Kraken, sens, Devils all need head coaches.
