24/7 Red Wings/Maple Leafs Episode One Thread

"Because it was staged"...Did you expect them to bust out some Shakespeare or improv a sketch on Obamacare or Rob Ford? It was hockey players doing what hockey players do when faced with a camera. They certainly weren't going to talk about themselves or how good they are...they aren't NBA or NFL players. lolz

This doesn't make sense.  The criticism wasn't that it was boring or even the fact that it was staged, but that it was presented as being a conversation that began organically and not as a result of HBO coaxing it out of them.

Imagine if Burke had still been around with this thing?  That would have provided some entertainment value.

You realize most reality / unscripted TV shows are anything but right?

Just finished watching the first episode. Actually I skipped all the Red Wings parts haha

I liked it. Obviously the first episode the players are getting used to the cameras following them around and you can tell they are playing the part. As we get into more episodes, the camera men will kinda disappear and we will get a more intimate view into the locker room, their personalities on and off the ice.

I didn't even notice the suits, just the wife.

Speaking of wives, I didn't realize David Clarkson's was so attractive. Or that he was married, to be honest.
I've had the pleasure of serving Clarkson at a restaurant I used to work at. He's a really nice and fun guy and a generous tipper.

And his wife is absolutely beautiful.

"The Leafs and the 29 teams they play". You're no hockey fan and you're the worst kind of Leaf fan! ;)

Yeah. He seems like a perfectly decent person. I just wish he was a better hockey player.

Have you ever seen a well payed pro athlete with an ugly women?

I've been a big fan of previous installments of this series, so I couldn't have been more excited for the Leafs to be a part of this year's. That being said, maybe I hyped it up TOO much in my head?

I thought the first episode was by far the most boring in the history of the series. And Bow-Tie Phaneuf looked like an uber-tool.

Yep. I won't name any names, but I've also had the pleasure of serving many Toronto Raptors, both former and current and let's just say, some of their dates must have had terrific personalities.

I've met him a few times and he's actually one of the nicest, friendliest hockey players I've ever met, but yeah, that doesn't win games.

That entire supposedly candid talk between players about Datsyuk seemed staged to me.  That's the problem I had with it, not the fact that it was also boring.

Except the Phaneuf thing, goof though I did on who was actually talking about clothes, seemed just as staged or done for the camera's benefit. I've seen Dion Phaneuf in a suit a lot of times and I can't, to the best of my recollection, ever think of a time I saw him wearing anything remotely like what he wore for the show. The idea that a bunch of Red Wings players would talk about Pavel Datsyuk at dinner didn't strike me as any more ridiculous.

The whole sequence with his suits and his wife and his car made me cringe.  I think they definitely took some liberties with the editing but if it was me (the captain of the team with the highest ticket prices in the league) I wouldn't be giving tours of my walk-in closet full of expensive clothes or my Bentley.
