Canadian Olympic orientation camp roster announced

Player for Canada's team will be name by within 15 minutes.

Any wagers as to who it will be?

St. Louis?
Giroux?
Neal?
Staal?
Hall?

I've been hearing Neal's name being tossed around a lot this morning. He may be a better replacement for Stamkos as a natural sniper than St. Louis.

I'm a little bit surprised Stamkos pulled out so early. I thought the team had up until the day of their first preliminary game to make any final roster changes because of injuries? It sucks that he can't go, especially since he should have probably been on the team in 2010 as well (I'm not really complaining that he wasn't of course considering how that ended up). He'll have to wait until 2018 to represent his country at the Olympics now, and that's if NHLers even go that time around.

Glad St. Louis was named his replacement. He definitely deserves it.

It always seemed odd to me that they were even considering him for eligibility.  Even if he did get "clearance" to come back, he would be a guy going 3 months without playing from a significant injury and then being expected to line up against the best players in the world in a short tournament.  That's crazy.

Yeah. It kind of reminds me of when Orr missed out in '72 due to injury. Stamkos could end up being one the greats when all is said and done, and he has yet to don the red and white on the big stage. Hopefully the NHL goes to the next Olympics and he's at the top of his game. Fortunately he's still very young. He's just been unlucky when it comes to playing in the Olympics.

If it was (almost) anybody but Stamkos I would agree with you. But like I said, he's a top-5 forward in the world. If he can skate he plays.

Well the team doctor said they're going to re-evaluate him in 2-3 weeks because he's not fully healed yet, so he wouldn't play even if he waited until the first game regardless.

Yeah. Part of my surprise also comes from the fact though that everybody seemed so sure that he would be playing this Saturday. Yesterday even Carlyle said he thought there was a chance the Leafs might see him tonight.

What surprised me about the whole thing is the fact the doctors didn't do updated exam/X-ray last week before everybody's hope was built up for him making the squad.

St. Louis replaced Stamkos on the roster, but the question now becomes who replaces Stamkos in the line-up? That might not be the same answer. I wonder if Babcock wants a more pure shooter like Carter, or if Bergeron gets a look to see if he can rekindle some of that WJC chemistry he had with Crosby.

Sometimes the wait between checks is for a reason.  You want to see the progress of bone healing, but you also need to see if there is any damage from the stress put on the bone with the physical workouts.  Checking too often doesn't give the best information.  I think this is likely a case of just not seeing enough healing rather than seeing something new that would have been seen last week.

I don't know why but I'm not overly thrilled with the choice. St. Louis is obviously a good player but I've never really been impressed with him internationally. I think, despite the point totals, there's been a reason he's been passed over the last two Olympics.

What's your guess as to why he's been passed over so many times? Size would be the obvious guess. He does have the speed required to play on the bigger ice surface.

Stamkos said that before his meeting with the doctors he expected to play tonight. I can't even imagine how devastating that must have been after working so hard to get to this point.

I'm okay with the choice but it feels like there was so much attention put on the fact he wasn't chosen the first time, plus the talk hasn't really subsided at all ever since, that Yzerman almost had no choice. It seemed to almost get political, like the most offensive thing Y could have done was to snub him again.

I mean, size is the obvious one but even then I've always sort of thought that size was a reason people thought you might not make it in the NHL not that it was something that would make you less valuable once you've proven you could. I mean, Theo Fleury made the '98 and '02 teams and he was roughly the same size.

I apologize for how unscientific this is going to sound but I can't help but maybe think that it has something to do with the fact that for all of his points we don't see much in the way of highlights? Like we don't see the flashes of individual skill and effort that display the remarkable?

I don't watch the Lightning a ton so I'm a little uninformed on the subject but just from personal experience when the Leafs have played him I'm never super concerned with the team stopping him specifically and I don't feel like he kills them but then you'll look at the scoresheet and see he had two assists or something.

This is the problem, fans tend to think with their hearts rather than using logic.

The way people were saying how dare Yzerman leave him off, almost got a bit annoying.
