Every other team's stars are apparently cap/salary idiots, except for ours

I think this eventually turns into a pretty good deal once Caufield develops a bit and the cap jumps up. He was on pace for 46 goals before his shoulder injury in January (don't look at assists).

If there was ever a time though for a young star who hasn't exploded yet to think, maybe I should take a bridge, the current environment would certainly be one.

They like the security I guess.  Leaf stars bet on themselves and I don't blame them. Draisaitl has probably cost himself 12M when his current contract is up by signing for 8 years. He'd easily be making 12.5M last year and for the next 2. I don't think Caufield is elite tho.

I think everyone knows how much the flat cap has sucked but that's a pretty crazy way to put it. Assuming a $1mil cap increase this offseason the cap will have gone up by just $4mil over the course of Nylander's 6-year contract. If the $88mil projections for the 24/25 cap stand it'll go up by more than that in a single offseason after Nylander's deal expires.

I will anoint and triple-crown Treliving myself if he gets William Nylander on 8.8M x 8.

I like Caufield, think that's a really good value deal for him for Montreal

Good for him and everything but I don't think there's any doubt that if he was negotiating after actually coming off of a season of big time production vs. projecting to have had a season of big-ish production(and even then, a season of 64 points) he'd have done better for himself.

I don't entirely understand him going for the 8 years here but, you know, it's his life and everything.

Although I think Caufield is one dimensional I think it's an awesome deal for the Habs. Kid can snipe but only concern with him is health pretty small player. If he stays healthy for his career this will be a steal of a contract.

If the shoulder injury doesn't have any lasting impacts on his shot, this a pretty good contract. A healthy Caufield is going to score 35+ just about every year - even if he's not going to bring much else to the table. I still worry about his size/stature once things get more intense, but the Habs probably don't have to worry about that for a little while...

Maybe but there's certain players I don't worry about. I think Debrincat would be a good comparable.

DeBrincat throws a lot hits, though. He very much engages physically. Caufield does not. Other than the physical similarities, they're very different players.

Most smaller guys that succeed are playmakers rather than snipers. Those snipers that do succeed are typically more in the DeBrincat mold than the Caufield mold.

I see Caufield as Phil Kessel lite. Not a hot dog joke, more along the lines of recognizing what an elite 5 on 5 scorer kessel was in his prime, along with providing virtually nothing else.

But if you're only going to be good at one thing, scoring is a pretty good choice.

Another great signing I think. Makes me cringe when I look at some of ours. Reilly's deal was in my opinion the only good one Dubas was involved in.

I think he's one dimensional but kid can score for sure. Contract will look extremely good down the road.
