I think if Nylander doesn't sign with the Leafs, he is a moron and let him rot elsewhere, anywhere! I feel very confident the Leafs made him a fair offer. If he cares more about money than his teammates and winning a cup, he can screw off.

I kind of feel the same way, but I'm trying not to post stuff like this to avoid giving Islander fans fodder for the boo-frigging-hoo fest they will throw if Nylander doesn't re-sign.

Golf clap.

TSN - The Marner camp isn?t interested in negotiating until after the season.

Also TSN - Marner wants to sign for 10 million and not buy out any free agency.

Have to love them passing off their insider information by continuously making stuff up

Let Dubas get the best possible return either now or hopefully at the trade deadline (to add assets for a cup run this year).

Luckily Dubas has mastered that old sales technique of when you want to sell a product, the first thing to do is spend three months letting everyone know that you think it isn't worth the asking price and then waiting until the day before it expires to put it on the market.

After all, what team won't be lining up to give the Leafs a ton of assets for a selfish player who cares more about money than his teammates and winning a cup?

Exactly what I was thinking. He won't have much value right now based in the way the asset was handled. No use getting spare parts back for a 60pt+ 22yr old forward.

This makes no sense. If you don't buy any FA years the salary will be less. Certaintly not $10M if he expects the contract to take him to UFA

Even if Willy signs today we won't see him in the lineup until next week at this point. He's still in Sweden no way he flies over and plays

Yeah, it's unlikely he gets into the game tomorrow. There'll have to be another roster move to get him on the roster, any way.

Regardless of the contract outcome for Nylander, I expect one of the ELCs to be papered down to the Marlies temporarily today (Ozhiganov?). They can sort out who they need to waive after the contract sorts out.

Yup. To say nothing of personal feelings re: the Leafs and how they handle things, short of probably the two absolute least likely things at this point(Nylander signing a very team friendly deal or a team deciding to offer a boatload for Nylander now) this really does have to go down as a really bungled process by Dubas over a comparatively insignificant amount of money.

There's something in the CBA that lets team use a "waivers with the intent to loan to the AHL" provision in these cases. Basically it transfers the player who is placed on waivers to a non-roster spot while he's there and that opens up a spot on the roster for Nylander.

Anybody who said that this would have reached the end of November in training camp would have been laughed at and mocked ferociously. Mostly by me.

For pretty much the first time in the history of sporting negotiations, I'm actually siding with the player here.  And I definitely agree in that I think Dubas has completely botched this.

Yeah. It's a simple thing to handle. It's just a matter of who is getting pushed out.

Also, any sort of move today that opens a roster spot for the Leafs (either a minor trade or someone on waivers) could be an indication that something is close

We will see if he signs under 7M per on 6-year deal all will be forgotten.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that's only available when the team has a player coming off the IR.

Without actually knowing any of the specifics about what's been offered it's tough for me to take a firm position on a side here but what I keep coming back to is that I just don't see where this is a good outcome for the Leafs regardless of your thoughts on Nylander. If Nylander was being totally unreasonable, asking for a contract his play in no way merits and refusing to negotiate...this is still a bad outcome.

By all accounts Carolina and Elias Lindholm weren't at all able to get a deal worked out because they were very far apart...so Carolina moved him quickly and got a good return and, hey look, Lindholm is playing pretty well to start the season(with the caveat that scoring numbers are wonky right now).

Yeah just double checked the CBA for it. It's only for when someone comes off the IR or a trade or a successful waiver claim. So everything except a signing unfortunately.

I agree. Unfortunately, sometimes there are only bad outcomes and one chooses between the bad outcomes.

The only positive I see is that there have been no leaks/negative comments from the negotiators (aside from Shanny?s stupid comment about taking less).  Neither side is giving interviews and trashing the other.  As long as he does sign, the situation continues to appear salvageable, at least outwardly.
