Devils acquire Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson

To many forwards and not enough D, they traded a W for a D. They kept their C's intact. Hopefully it brings better balance to the team. Yes Hall is viewed as the better player in the trade but maybe it makes sense for EDM to improve the balance of skill between F and D. They will likely be better team because of the trade.

Toews is also significantly better than RNH, and, the production gap between him and Kane isn't as big the gap between Hall and RNH. Toews has outscored Kane in a few seasons, and has been within a couple points in others. The only times RNH has come close to the same production as RNH were seasons where Hall missed 20+ games due to injury.

He's an excellent player, no doubt, but I think his trade should definitely cast a sideways glance on the idea that if you stock your roster with a bunch of excellent players you then get to "deal from a position of strength".

Teams are always going to be more interested in what they want than what you have.

Centers who have never even put up 60 point don't have more value than wingers who have multiple point-per-game seasons. RNH is a very good 2nd line center. Hall is a 1st line winger. He has more value.

Maybe ask Chicago if they value Kane or Toews more.  Kane puts up many more points.

RNH  313GP - 77G - 145A - 222P

Over that time Toews made an All-Star team (legitimately, not the Leo Komarov vote that RNH got in 2015).  He also won a Conn Smythe and had put up 50 playoff points.

Kane outscored Toews by 45 points.
Hall outscored RNH by 64 points.

The comparison is silly.
 
Have to figure scarcity figures into value as well. Hall is their #1 LW and #1 W. Nugent-Hopkins might very well be their #3 C going forward.

I might still have leaned towards Kane, because of Hall's less than impressive health record, but, it was definitely closer.

That's fair, although I meant strictly in terms of ranking them as hockey players. If it was taking everything into consideration for who I would want on my team, Hall's health issues would come into play but so would their contracts and that's a huge advantage for Hall.
 
This trade makes the Subban trade a little easier to swallow.  Absolutely shameful.  There is no way that was the best return you could get for Hall.

And how Hall performs when undoubtedly challenged with being on a defensive juggernaut that is New Jersey.

Since that failed I wonder if the Blues would interested in a deal centred around JVR, obviously contingent on whether or not Shattenkirk would extend with the Leafs.
