Dubois to WPG for Laine and Roslovic

Feels to me like if a team's leadership is unable to figure out how to fit in a mercurial personality it's a failure on their part regardless. Lots of teams have won with guys who were labelled "difficult" elsewhere. It's not easy, sure, but it is one of the challenges of good leadership.

Yeah. We're not talking a Sean Avery level of disruptiveness here. There were never serious public issue with Laine - maybe the Fortnite stuff, but that was generally seen as amusing more than anything else. This was basically entirely an internal personality conflict, and that's absolutely on team leadership to do a better job with.
And not just with Laine. Roslovic wasn't resigning with them either for what he deemed unfair treatment. I think both CBJ and WPG have some issues, like probably most teams. However to have a 2nd and 3rd overall wanting out this early, isn't a great endorsement of great places to play.

So Roslovic is up to 4 points in 5 games with the Blue Jackets already. Laine has played just 2 games and has 1 goal. Looks like they're on a line together with Cam Atkinson.

Dubois has finally arrived in Winnipeg and these are the lines that they will be starting with:

I thought they might have moved Stastny to the wing but it looks like they're going to keep everyone at centre and spread out the wealth. Dubois will be starting on their 3rd line alongside Kyle "6th in the NHL in goals last season" Connor.

Laine and Roslovic have combined for 10G 10A in 22GP.  I didn't watch a second of the game and it looks like their line didn't score and was -2 but I do love that Torts is a dick to his top players all the time.

It doesn't help that, when he's not putting the puck into the net, Laine doesn't do much else to help the team win. Roslovic is better at that, but also probably should be getting 1st line assignments.

Sounds like a fun trade deadline pick up option

It's like they didn't know who they were trading for...

Fit in any line of work is so important.

If Columbus is willing to come off their high horse, Pittsburgh would be a very fun fit to get extended life out of Crosby. Philly will probably try to revisit this as well.

Boston has a similar mentality to Columbus outside their top line, but the Jackets don't have a Bergeron/Marchand to carry a firestick (Pastrnak).

I'd bet Tortorella gone at the end of the season as opposed to Laine at the deadline. The GM must realize at this point he's detrimental to keeping talent in the organization.

I wouldn't say he is outright detrimental to keeping talent overall, but Tortorella, if this is actually his primary style, certainly narrows the scope and market significantly. I'd argue Tortorella is coaching and preaching this playstyle because of the bulk of his personnel.

Talent needs a talented environment to thrive and succeed; right now they have a lot of grinding talent which is affordable but limited in long-run effectiveness. Adding talent balance will take time, opportunity, and is stupid difficult in a flat-cap environment. It might be in their best interest to punt a depreciating asset (especially one that needs significant on-ice support to maximize) and time their scoring/skilled prospects to come up together later rather than adding one or two piecemeal to a team that isn't currently able to leverage them anyway.

Columbus has the 5th worst goal differential in the league.  They are 5th last in goals scored per game and 9th in goals against/game.

Maybe the problem is he is stifling his team more than an outright lack of talent.  It's certainly not the most skilled lineup in the league but watching a few of their games this year they look more like the Horachek Leafs than a well oiled tough team.

Roslovic is scoring at a 58-point pace for Columbus this season.

Torts is keeping it interesting if nothing else.
Looking back at this big trade, it's really turned into a meh kind of deal now. Dubois doesn't look that good on the Jets and Laine is doing just as well on CBJ. Roslovic is the best point getter out of the 3, weird.
