Free Agent Pursuit Thread(No You-Know-Who)

I want a Veteran D to help the kids this year. Who's a realistic candidate? Is Boyle retired?

Maybe Schenn can come back to help the kids on what to expect or did the Leafs pressure and management wreck him?

Gardiner is the same age as Schenn.

Good solid defensive vet D Seidenberg is interesting and could be had cheap.

Seidenberg is basically done. His knees are shot.

Older defenseman with bad legs?  Let's sign him for 3 years!

Hey, I didn't break one twice in a year, jeebus, and I'm 34... D

PS, somehow the Leafs phone number forwards to an insurance company, wth?

I still say he stays healthier than Lupul.  :)

That's a low bar, but, even if he does, I'm not sure he could out-skate Robidas right now.

I think Lou's content to make Robidas forget what skates are.  Sidenberg probably has a season or two of fight left in him.  Might be worth a two year while Loov, Nielsen and Dermott continue to develop.  Sidenberg still has a boomer at least.

I guess my post was 2 questions:

1. Vet D availbable?

2.Can Schenn help?

There are healthier options out there to fill that role, if that's something the Leafs feel compelled to do. Finding placeholder 3rd pairing defencemen is really pretty simple.

And, definitely does not have a booming shot anymore. I'm not sure he ever really did. He wasn't exactly known for offence. And, well, he can barely make it into the offensive zone to use it.

The team's got Rielly, Zaitsev, Marincin, Gardiner, Carrick, Hunwick and Corrado. Personally, I don't really think bringing in a veteran adds a lot if you need to bench one of those guys to do it.

Some kind soul (Greg Stamper) collected all the HERO charts for UFA D-men:

These two had the best bars.

I don't really want any of them.

I think that Demers would be a really good fit for a team who can compete right now and would use him as a 2nd pairing defenceman. That's definitely not the Leafs though.

Bozak has been a mainstay on the PK- especially for faceoffs.

Only for faceoffs. Last season, he averaged 12 seconds of PK time per game. The season before? 41 seconds. He hasn't been one of the team's top 4 PK forwards since 12/13.

Yup, goes to show just how distracted I was during the last year - harder to pay close attention games with a newborn around!

Based on this (sorted by Fenwick-Against per 60):

http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/ratings.php?disp=1&db=201516&sit=4v5&pos=forwards&minutes=1&teamid=28&type=fenwick&sort=A60&sortdir=ASC

Our PK forwards should be Komarov (50.24 FA/60), Hyman (51.53 FA/60), Holland (57.19 FA/60), Froese (58.76 FA/60) with Bozak (97.45 FA/60!!!) taking faceoffs and getting the hell off.

Lots of those guys have small sample sizes so you can't assess them much, but Bozak's stats are funny.... A very high rate of unblocked shot attempts against per 60 (and its been above 90 for the last 3 years), yet, zero goals against.  Freddy the Goat... 20 minutes shorthanded, also zero goals against (68.90 FA/60).  Pretty good for a 20 yr old rookie.

BTW, Komarov was 2nd best in the league for forwards with over 100 mins PK time.  Winnik was 3rd.  A FA/60 of approximately 72.0 looks like the league median among forwards and defenseman.

Interesting stats among defensemen, Leafs and otherwise, with over 100 mins PK time:

Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Ellis, FA/60 of 46.43 and 46.90 respectively, best in the league.  (Subban is slightly ahead of Weber, both hovering at league average)
J.M. Liles:  52.40 (4th)
Seidenberg:  60.65 (8th)
Phaneuf:  61.64 (10th)
Quincey:  61.84 (12th)
Marincin:  62.43 (13th)
Polak:  63.06 (15th)
Hunwick:  65.69 (23rd)
Russel:  65.78 (24th)
Rielly:  66.85 (29th)
Hamhuis:  68.75 (39th)
Demers:  82.48 (121st)
Hedman:  84.55 (124th)
Keith:  89.30 (125th, last)

Other Leafs D, some with sample sizes that shouldn't make us draw too many conclusions:

Carrick:  31.72 (in 7:34)
Corrado:  59.35 (in 26:17)
Gardiner:  62.69 (in 26:48)

None of the Leafs defensemen were below league average.  Pretty good coaching our PK has.

Anyone else surprised he's still in the league? I thought his career was pretty much done after getting traded back to Carolina, but here we are. I wonder if the evolution of the D game into a skating/transition skillset over the last little while has kept him relevant for longer.

Dreger and Mike Johnson have both said that the Leafs are interested in Kris Russel. McKenzie specifically said that Babcock wants "veteran experience" on the blueline. Not gonna lie, I'm a lot more scared of July 1st this year than I was last year.

As am I.

I hope we go after nobody tomorrow.

Both TOR brass/Cowen's rep refused comment on status. Belief is Cowen's medical status is in question. Injured player can't be bought out.

It's believed NHLPA is now involved. This may well be subject of grievance arbitration but details scarce as both sides refuse to comment.

When Cowen arrived from OTT in trade, he was shut down from active duty due to hip-related issues. So, for now, no buyout on Cowen.

So it's being disputed, the two sides could end up working something out.

From Friedman:

1) On Jared Cowen, hearing NHL & NHLPA began an arbitration case yesterday to determine whether or not TOR can buy him out...

2) There is still more to be done, so a decision is not expected in immediate future. No one (NHL, NHLPA, team or agent) is talking...

3) but, word is Cowen had surgery after he left TOR on a doctor's recommendation. Prior to that, he had been cleared to play in AHL...

4) So the dispute surrounds whether or not he was healthy. Apparently, that's for the arbitrator to decide. (Fini)
