I just don't see why you hold on to JVR at this point. If you care about winning in the next two years, sure, but if you realize that's not likely to happen...man this seems like a trade market a smart team wants to be a part of with a big chip.

I agree, he's our best trade chip and most likely to improve our defense.  Other than that, I'm not sure he's that dispensable considering our depth of Left Wing prospects.

Consider this:  Marner, Brown, Kapanen, Hyman, Korshkov all shoot right.  Nylander may be the best shot at playing LW, but assuming Bozak also gets traded, he moves back to the middle where I think he's best suited long term.  Some of those guys may be able to make the switch to their off-wing, but I wouldn't count on it.

Best LW prospects:  Soshnikov, Timashov, Grundstrom, Leipsic.  None of them are on JVR's level and I don't expect any of them to be 1st line winger material.

I believe Soshnikov is one of those LH-RWers, opposite to Lupul's RH-LW.
Other LW options are Bozak (if Nylander takes centre), Holland, Laich and Komarov, but they don't have long term potential.

Provided you've got talent up front I'm really not sure it matters that much how it's distributed. Finding a decent LW down the road when it's needed isn't a task on the level of finding a #1 C or D.

So about those Matt Martin rumours...

On a relatively cheap, 2 year deal as someone to expose in the expansion draft? Maybe. Anything else? No thanks.

I don't see the Leafs flinging open their wallets for anyone, now.  They won't overpay for a UFA.

The interesting thing might be in how the team decides to tackle penalty killing next year. Komarov seems pretty likely. Laich and Grabner seem pretty likely to be in those spots if they're around. In theory that does leave some PK time open.

So Martin makes some sense if you don't want to throw any of the kids into the penalty killing deep end. Other than that...?

I just basically see him as an upgrade to Clune.

Sorry, ignore my post. I confused Martin with Czikas in my head. Martin didn't PK.

Also, Grabner is UFA, and I don't think we'll retain his services anyway.

Probably not but even though my brain shorted out on the specifics the question of who's going to be on the PK is still real.

Bozak has been a mainstay on the PK- especially for faceoffs... if he lasts the season on the roster that is.  Hyman did it from the moment he came up from the Marlies IIRC.

Certainly. No Winnik :(

Bozak, Komarov, Holland, Hyman, Froese (haha), Greening?
Matthews and Marner both played PK on their previous teams, but I don't know if I want to expose them to that.

Bozak pretty much only came out for faceoffs, then got the hell off.

Only for faceoffs. Last season, he averaged 12 seconds of PK time per game. The season before? 41 seconds. He hasn't been one of the team's top 4 PK forwards since 12/13.

I want a Veteran D to help the kids this year. Who's a realistic candidate? Is Boyle retired?

Maybe Schenn can come back to help the kids on what to expect or did the Leafs pressure and management wreck him?

Why?
