I wish I knew why this team can't win.  Then I could be coach.  Very frustrating to see the rebuilding Sens in a playoff spot and the Leafs are now out.

I guess the Leafs are rebuilding too

I thought the leafs were almost rebuilt.

Funny how Talon turns Florida into a very good team in 1 year while in year 4 Burke's team is still awful.

Leafs = awful

Florida = very good team

Toronto = 18 wins

Florida = 19 wins

Everyone knows that the true measure of a team is it's penalty killing ability and their playoff spot.

Florida has 20 wins and 47 points.
Leafs have 18 wins and 41 points.

See a difference?

Whoops NHL.com team stats page didn't have the 20th win, saw it now on the standings page.

But seriously, that could again change in a week's time.  That's not a big enough difference for one to be labeled very good and another to be labeled awful, which was the point.

Difference is the games are getting tougher now (more pressure) and Leafs are doing their usual crumble when the games count. Once we're safely out of playoff spot they can go on a tear again and miss the playoffs by 5-6 points.

The refs blew, but even so, neither team looked good tonight. That game was a mess.

Maybe the Leafs can't win messy games....

I don't know about that, but it just seemed like a game where neither team was very sharp, and both seemed to unravel as the game went on.

Just watched the game on tape....thank God for fast forward. :)

Bad officiating is back. It got better for a couple of years after the horrible 00-09 decade but too many of the past 15 games or so the refs were a factor. If that keeps up I won't be watching too many games.

And the PK...sheesh. They'd be better off just piling everyone in front of the net for 2 minutes, soccer wall style. :)

I'm not going to blame refs...Leafs were okay tonight I thought Reimer was good.

PK is my only concern right now.

My only concern is how the Leafs had a 7pt lead on 8th place in November, and are now in 12th.

As an aside, I thought the Jets would be one Canadian team I could cheer for second to the Leafs. Pfftt. That thought just died. What was up with the hostility of that crowd? It's like all the tickets were sold with a free flight in Ottawa.

Don't get me wrong, I know the fans were there for a good time and all, and I don't begrudge them that. But still, totally alienated from the Jets now.

Refs were a factor, no two ways about it. Sure PK is the primary villain, but random penalizing just has to stop, it totally cheapens the game.

I mean think about it, when you know your PK sucks the first natural response is to let up on aggression to try to take less penalties. That ends up giving the other team more opportunities 5 on 5. Then you get phantom calls anyway and still end up with more penalties than the opposition - the playing field has just been stacked against you. It's no consolation that the other team gets phantom calls as well, that's irrelevant. A team should be able to make a conscious strategic decision to play disciplined and not take penalties. A game like last night makes that impossible. Seriously, I know people talk about home ice officiating advantage, but that call last night was just a total embarrassment for the league. I blame the refs for that.

I was fine with the crowd... until they called a penalty on Franson. I guess it's just home ice advantage.

10th actually.

... and the next 8 of 9 games will be played at home.  This will be this team's opportunity to take advantage of this homestand.  We'll see how they fare.  I'm hoping for a little winning streak to nudge them back up in the standings.

In the second half, teams tighten up defensively and shore up their goaltending.  This will make it doubly difficult for a Toronto team unless they continue their offensive streak and better balanced scoring, turn their goaltending up a notch AND improve that PK a little bit, please!

Poor Dave Steckel.  He must be getting tired of having to answer for the team's atrocious PK:

Quote
"On other teams I played on we had a rule where we never tried to take more three or four penalties in a game", Steckel said.  "How many did we take tonight?  We work on our penalty kill every practice and it seems we know exactly what we really want to do.  Maybe it's because there are no consequences when we get scored on in practice.  We seem to do things right for the most part, but then there's a breakdown and the puck ends up in our net.  It is very frustrating.  We need a game where we kill four or five penalties to get our confidence back."

A little jab at the goaltending IMO. Rightfully so.
