Goaltending Showdown - Reimer vs. Bernier

There are teams that would love to have Toronto's goaltending duo -- two top-notch, reliable netminders.  Lucky us, we have them.  Pity for the rest.  :)

After tonights game in Edmonton it looks like we have the 3rd and 8th rated goalies in the NHL on Save %

Reimer on .949 and Bernier on .930

That's a solid base.

At the end of the season, if they can maintain close to those numbers, Nonis is going to look like a genius.

I think, my friends, that this question is going to be a toss-up all season.  They won't always play this well in tandem, but I can't see either one establishing a clear advantage.

This is the best goaltending tandem I can ever remember on the Leafs.  We've had individual great #1 goalies in the past, but I don't remember a time when I was so comfortable with either goalie playing.  They're both showing they can be #1 goalies.

This is such a excellent problem to have.. Can they award the Vesna to goaltending tandum. LOL

Montreal had Halak and Price a few years ago.  Imagine how better that team would have been if they had kept both goalies.  All I hope for is the Leafs keep both for as long as possible...having one good goalie is good, but to have 2 is absolutely amazing.

Problem is they're both going to want to get paid eventually and you can't tie up that much money into goaltending.

Bingo. It works now with them combining for a 4.6M cap hit. I would imagine that one of them is shipped off this summer (and hopefully for a good return).

I don't think that's necessarily the case. Right now I think that most people would be comfortable with a situation where, say, you have a clear cut #1 locked up for 7 million or so provided they're at the top of the league and then another million for a competent back-up. So if most people would be good with tying up 8 million of a 64 million dollar cap in goaltending then as the cap grows down the line you can have 9-10 million in the position at roughly the same percentage.

Is 10 million enough to lock up both players long term? Probably not but it's not crazy.

But the problem here is the possibility that Bernier plays well enough to get top goalie money plus Reimer gets midrange money.  Thats a lot of money tied up in goaltending.

I don't think either one would sign a long term deal knowing the other one is as well. Both these guys are going to be the number 1.

I have to hand it to Reimer, I had my doubts about him going into the season, but in my estimation he's playing the best hockey of his career so far.  They've pretty much split the games (Bernier 11 starts, Reimer 9) and the team save % is .940, that's an incredible duo.  Hope it can keep up.

I was quite confident that Reims can play very well (except the rebounds), however I was not sold on Bernier. In LA he played behind very responsible defence, facing 25 shots per game and playing once per week. But he handled the workload and sometimes crappy defence pretty well. They are both damn good goalies.

NikAitken: @mlse Since Reimer's NHL debut a goalie has made 49 saves and won a game just four times.  Three of those are Reimer. http://t.co/mCcf7l0oWR

It's also only happened 60 times in the last 25+ seasons. 28 times since the 04/05 lockout, and in of those 28, the Leafs have been involved in 6 of them - winning 4.
