So is this a conditioning stint where he'll be back soon or something more?

As someone on Twitter mentioned, he's at 77 games and 80 is when he reaches waiver eligibility?  Probably a combination of that, dealing with the numbers on D, and letting him get back up to speed with the Marlies.

EDIT: Although kind of weird considering Marlies have 1 game tomorrow then are off for the All-Star break.

I don't think it's something more

Watching Liles, Reimer, Lombardi and now Gardiner return from head injuries in past year shows how they affect players even after returning.

He might go down for the 1 game before the AHL all star break then come right back up.

Clearly his timing is off... some work at the AHL level would do him a lot of good.

Not entirely sure how to feel.  I think he looked better than Holzer, Fraser, and Franson at least.  Holzer is already back with the Marlies.  Fraser's not a bad option as a 7th defenseman in that he brings in a body who can in theory fight if you need him to and can play a simple defensive game.
Franson I'd just be loathe to lose on waivers for nothing.

Then again, I think its a bit of an unfair slight against Gardiner who was one of the better defensemen last year to lose his spot to injury when you have a bunch of guys who are rusty because of the lockout too.

Didn't really get to see much of the game yesterday, but during my lunch break I tuned in during the 1st to see Gardiner just blow by EVERYBODY from the defensive end to Nabokov. The speed definitely looked to be there, the body control, everything.

I heard he played poorly the night before (also missed due to work), but I'm not sure how bad he could have looked if he can still do THAT.

There was one play last night where he made two brutal passes to the same guy. I also noticed him stumble for no reason a couple times with and without the puck which is uncharacteristic with a skater of his calibre.

He is clearly off. I actually think a bit of time with the Marlies to readjust would be good for him.

Good point, but maybe these players were rushing back.  Reimer was only out a month with his concussion/whiplash. Gardiner wasn't out long and was pushing it to try and play the first game.  Crosby returned well from his concussion last time but then again he waited long enough to be 100%.

TO Star link
With the AHL on its all-star break, Jake Gardiner practised with the Leafs because there was no point in having him remain idle. Once the Marlies? season resumes, it?s expected Gardiner will return to the Marlies for more conditioning. He is returning from a concussion.

Gardiner has been sent back down to the Marlies. Interesting. I kind of thought he'd be inserted back into the Leafs lineup for Thursday's game. I wonder if he's still not feeling 100%?

I don't think that was ever the plan. He was brought back up because the Marlies had no games or practices because of the AHL All Star game. The intention, from what I've read, was only to bring him up so that he could skate with the team in practice until the Marlies season resumed.

I hope this has the same impact on him that it did to Frattin, when on his game, he is certainly a better player than at least a few guys we have playing in our top six.

If this guy is healthy, we need him back on the big club, we have had next to no offense from the back end.

I don't think he's 100% yet. In the couple games he was in the line-up, his timing was off and he didn't look as dynamic as he was last season. A couple weeks with the Marlies should do him a load of good.
