Jets @ Leafs - Mar. 11th, 7:00pm - TSN4, Fan 590

Well, as disappointing as the results were last week I don't think the team actually played that poorly in any of the games so it's good to see them get some results.

A couple tweaks here and there, get some guys healthy. I'm as confident as I ever was(which is to say, not very much. I'm still a Leafs fan).

How was that not a slash on the Jets? Lucky we didn't get beat on that play. Ridiculous the calls that get called and the stuff that's let go. Good they got the win. Deserved better the last week.

Like I said earlier, against average goaltending, they win at least 2 of the 3 losses. Possibly all 3, and we?re celebrating an 8 game win streak. They?re playing about as well as I can remember ever seeing.

Every goal is "not on him".

Team must be trash.

Watch the replay of that goal as objectively as you can.  There?s nothing Anderson could have done.

It's more just venting.

But also the constant "that was a hard one can't blame Andersen" drives me crazy.

Anyways good game.

Blow em out next game.

What a great play by all three guys on the ice. Marner to get the puck up ice to Rielly, Rielly's harder than it looked pass to Matthews and, well, you can collect your spare room key at the front desk Mr. Hellebuyck.

They just put up at stat about Hellebuyck. He's allowed 3 or more goals in 9 of his last 10 games.

He was unbelievable for these two games and the Leafs still put 7 past him. I think that tells you what you need to know about the team in front of him?s defensive play.

Like I said they're not even a playoff team without that guy.

Maybe, but, even if he?s only average, they?re still better than Ottawa and Vancouver, and are neck-and-neck with Calgary (and probably Montreal, too). Really, they?re probably not far behind Edmonton. After the Leafs, the next 4 teams in the division aren?t separated by that much in terms of overall talent.

I think it's clear the Leafs are the class of the North.

The same thing happened the other night when ... I forgot which Leaf scored but it might have been Vesey.

People keep having to say "there's nothing Andersen could do there" because people keep blaming Andersen for every single goal that goes in.

I mean, they're probably correct that he is terrible. His save % last night was .889 so that proves he is the anchor on this team.

Wait a minute, Hellebuyck had an .891 sv % last night and by all accounts, he was the first star. Something here doesn't hold up.

It's always been this way but there really does seem to be a subset of fans who think the standard of being a good goalie in the NHL is stopping every single goal that could possibly be stopped as well as a reasonable percentage of the ones that can't.

Having now had a night's sleep and half a day's work.

That Matthews goal is still making me feel all quaint.

And they were probably out of gas after an extended defensive sequence thanks to that uncalled slash.

Definitely seems to be a more frequent narrative - partly, I imagine, because there aren't many other facets of the Leafs' game to complain about on a consistent basis. Though, as I point out in the thread from the last game, looking at the numbers, the issue isn't Andersen so much - his 5-on-5 Sv% is strong (not spectacular, but solidly upper-middle of the pack), and he has one of the shortest average goal distances in the league (so, it's not like he's being beaten by a lot of long distance shots). At even strength, he's basically making all the stops he's reasonably expected to make. The issues in on the PK. The entire unit has been bad, and Andersen is not helping with it at all.

Complaining about the goaltending is not always unwarranted, but it's overused to the point of it being a lazy take most of the time it's used.

No one has clips of it, but shout out to Bogosian for continuing some solid play (2v1 aside) in getting back on puck retrievals, holding it an extra second or two to draw in the forecheck and slipping clean and easy passes to his teammates for exits. It's what Holl and Muzzin do so well (when they're on their game).
