Leafs Announce Training Camp Roster

Babcock broke the roster into 2 groups for practice today, with the first group basically being the NHL guys. These were the lines used:

JVR-Bozak-Boyes
Mathias-Kadri-Lupul
Komarov-Holland-Grabner
Winnik-Spaling-Parenteau
Acrobello-Panik

Hunwick-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Rielly
Marincin-Polak
Harrington-Robidas

So drop Harrington, and you've got what herman put together, minus the specific linemates/partners.

I knew this year was going to be tough...but oh man, this is really going to be tough.

Yeah, I don't think that there was really any debate about which players were going to be on the actual 23-man roster. The only question was if they'd be carrying a 14th or 8 defenceman, and that was answered with the Boyes signing.

It is indeed, Frank. This is not a good team.

The forwards are basically twelve 3rd liners plus Kadri and JVR. I don't exactly hate the defence though, although I think it should eventually change to Gardiner-Phaneuf, Marincin-Rielly.

No, but there's a lot of deadline trade bait on that roster. Rielly is really the only player that sticks out as not having the distinct possibility of being moved this season. A few others are unlikely to move, for a variety of reasons, but he's the only one that I'd say is a lock to be on the team at the end of the season.

Yeah, but still. Babcock doesn't like to lose so I'm projecting them at roughly 105 points.

By 105 points, that's your estimate for total offensive output, yes?

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the Rielly - Gardiner pairing either.  I'd rather see what you have above too.

Sure, but with Babcock's new system they'll only allow 35. 48-25-9. Book it.

To clarify, I don't think that it would be an awful pairing or anything (any Gardiner-debates at this point may as well be shelved until we see the team play again). I just think that those are our two best defencemen when it comes to exiting the zone. It makes more sense to have them separated so one of them is on the ice for the majority of the game.

I didn't know about Gardiner favouring the left side, or Rielly on the right. I only knew about Phaneuf's preference for the right.

I really like that eventual pairing you've got, and I hope it comes to fruition.

I agree with this. I think we only see one of JvR/Kadri/Gardiner sticking with the team to the end of the season.

That's my reasoning as well:  They're the 2 best skating d-men on the team.

Rielly played the right side a decent amount in junior, and whenever he and Gardiner are paired together he's the one playing his off-side. Gardiner did it a little as a Leaf I think maybe with Gunnarsson and said he didn't feel he was very effective there.

I don't know if they'll be able make the significant moves that moving those players in season might be (especially Gardiner and JvR, who still have term left on their contracts), but I wouldn't be surprised if only one of those 3 is on the roster for next season.

Well, I mean, if nothing else they probably are going to want to add something more significant in the way of picks than the deadline bait on the roster is likely to fetch.

This.  Your upcoming season is merely a prelude to a fullbore gut-out.

Agreed. It's really more that, given the way trades have gone down in the league over the past few seasons, moving JvR and/or Gardiner seems like something that's more likely to happen around or at the draft than in season.

I like to think that they're going to want to add another mid-1st round pick for next year...especially since the Pittsburgh one is likely going to be pretty late.
