We lost momentum because Phaneuf's hockey IQ just isn't good enough.  There was 1:14 left in a double minor and we had them back on their heels and were up 1.  Then he decided to give a guy a shove in the back.  There was no need.

Exactly correct, just a poor hockey IQ play.

Speaking of Komarov, what happened to him?

He decided to go back home I think? And is playing KHL

Agreed, there was no need to call an obvious embellishment by Prust in that situation.  It's unfortunate the refs hockey IQ failed them on that play.

Hogwash.  The refs are over sensitive to hits from behind, every NHL player knows it.  Phanuef made it an easy call for the refs.

Exactly, that was total embellishment by Prust, he literally jumped into the boards.

But like lc said, they call that every time.  What upside was there for Phaneuf to even touch him at that point?  None.

Exactly.

And what also might have been overlooked was that Phaneuf was tiring at the end of his shift, just before he shoved the opposing player, needlessly, into the boards.

Man  -  I just hope that the focus on this upcoming year is on the Leafs talent, and potential, rather than on  the necessity/idiocy of resigning Phaneuf.  He has had a negative plus-minus the past 3 years, and judging from this period, it might another struggle for Phaneuf this year.

I saw it as routine hockey play really, Prust just happened to slam on the brakes as Phaneuf was pushing him, then he jumped into the boards. Routine play...

Soft period for the Leafs, thinking back to the game last season where we beat up the Habs on the scoreboard 5-1 and in the fisticuff dept.  Big tough teams manhandle the Habs, the Leafs look nothing like that tonight

This is about the 4th or 5th time Carlyle has had Phaneuf and Franson out on the same pairing. The only two defencemen with experience playing on the right side.

It's also a routine penalty call.  That play happens alot, and a penalty is almost always called.

I agree with both sides not much of a hit and embellishment but the timing was dumb. Just got a couple weak calls, just scored on a 5 on 3 so you know with this crowd we'd probably get the next penalty. Phaneuf should have laid off whether it was deserving or not.
