Good angle of the game winner:

You can see Nylander skating toward the boards expecting Hunwick to win the race and wire it up to him. When that didn't happen and the play broke down he comes into the slot area to try and pick up Williams but just doesn't get there in time.

Proud of this team and they're gaining invaluable experience. Super close series that could have either team being the winner already. You can't ask for more then what we've got. Exciting to be a Leafs fan again!

Jake Gardiner says the #Leafs have to change something on their power play.

Maybe Jake should coach too.

Prior to the series some Caps penalty killers were talking about the Leafs PP and said things about their entries. It was clearly something that they had heavily pre-scouted prior to the series. The Leafs don't look like they've made any adjustments to it other than sometimes trying the double drop-pass, which just kills any speed that they have and has only made things worse it looks like.

A big dissapointment for me so far has been JVR.  As one of our few skilled forwards with size, he just doesn't seem willing to try to elevate his game which I thought would be well suited for playoffs.  He hasn't been skating like he can or using his size at all.  As far as I'm concerned, trading him in the off season should be strongly considered.

Ya after watching the replay I thought Andersen could have come out as well. Tough call sometimes. Oh well is what it is unfortunately but move on come back with a strong game on Sunday and force a game 7.

Heartbreaker, but still so proud of this team! All this playoff OT experience will pay off down the road. Game 5 winner in 2-2 series have huge advantage in winning series, but if the Buds can win Game 6 at home you just never know what will happen if they can get to Game 7.

GO LEAFS GO!!!

That's the best way to look at it, summed it up nicely. Play like they did tonight and chances are good game 6 goes to the Leafs. The Caps had a few good gaffes too tonight, teams are even so far as far as I saw it. That was great hockey!

It's been too long since Marner has had one of those "Jeez, he's dynamic" sorts of games. You hope it's not because teams have figured him out a little bit but either way I'd really like to see him on a different line.

Agreed. But Babcock has, like, one move for the forward lines -- swap Nylander for Brown -- so I doubt anything's going to happen. But where would he go?

I figure you either swap Brown for Marner or swap Bozak for Kadri.

Nylander was a disappointment all night and again he coasts in to the boards on the dump in and then sees Williams when it's too late.

Nylander's the best forward in this series.

Story of the game:
0/4
1/3

I would agree with you on that one but tonight he fumbled the puck all night and was not his night. Backchecking cost us. The D didn't help there either. I will agree with you on the PP as well it has looked awful this series compared to the regular season. Having problem just getting into the zone and generating anything.

William Nylander had 1:25 offensive zone puck possession. Matthews next highest Leaf, 0:48, Kuznetsov at 0:42 for Caps. Nylander's a stud.

I wonder what would happen if they swapped Nylander and Marner. Heavier load for Nylander, but he's the best forward right now and might, as they say, drive that line. Because Marner is not doing that.

That strikes me as a good long term question but in the immediate sense I'm not in favour of breaking up what is working to try and jump start what isn't.

Yeah, but that's why I'd be wary of changing the Kadri line. They're checking the Caps' 1L about as effectively as I could've hoped, and I can't really see what Marner would add, doubt Brown would get the Bozak line going.

Like I said, for me it's less about getting the Bozak line going and more getting Marner going. Put him in more of a counter puncher's role, give him a better center to set-up...I'm not saying I know it would work, just that I don't think Brown is really integral to what's working on that Kadri line.

Fun fact:

Not since 1951 have the Leafs gone through four overtimes in one playoff series.

Great game!  The OT...drats!  As for Kadri's hit on Ovechkin, it was reminiscent of those old-fashioned open-ice hip-check hits of eras past, only difference being that Kadri's below the knee hit can't be termed as a completely clean hit.  Glad that Ovi wasn't out for keeps and that no one tried to take Kadri's head off on account of it.

Looking forward to Game 6.  C'mon boys, let's get 'em!

GO LEAFS GO!!

Defensive breakdown on the OT winner and especially so by Reilly.  It was a slow dump in that just made it's way inside the trapezoid on Reilly's side.  He needed to get on his high horse and beat Johansson to the puck.  That would have ended the play.  Instead he glides over the blue line WITH Johansson then for whatever reason just gives up on the play.  Johansson has time and space to make the play to Kuz and then the pass to Williams to end it.

I'm pretty sure both defenders went behind the net, leaving Matthews the only guy in front to cover the two Caps players.

So, if the puck was on Reilly's side, it seems to me his partner screwed up by also going back for it when he should have held his position/coverage properly.

Edit:. This also explains Nylanders position - he was where he was supposed to be, and tried to help at the last moment after the second defender screwed it up.

No.  only 1 defender went behind the net.
