Awful. Just awful. JVR's was so much more deserving of a PS.

I'm not totally up to snuff on the rules for penalty shots, but don't the impeding actions need to make contact during the shooting motion?

Gardiner over the years has driven the coaches crazy. He can look so good some nights and absolutely horrible others. Mind boggling.

Oh look, a call that goes against the Leafs.  Disagree on that...how the hell is that a penalty shot?

He was slashed on a breakaway?

He wasn't in a prime position to score, just a flyby.  2 mins, but not a penalty shot.

That play was probably more deserving of an "embellishment" penalty than Nylander was.

Marner gets mauled on the boards....awesome

I've said it all along the team has no toughness. Hunter and boys I think have to address this with the rebuild. Need to find some players that have that bit of meanness as well. Noone there coming in to address that.

That penalty shot called against the Leafs in the Penguins game wasn't in the shooting motion was it?  I don't even think the Pens player had possession of the puck.

?\_(ツ)_/?

I'm not going to bother looking it up and just do what the refs are doing tonight: make it up.

I don't get it. What would an appropriate level of toughness have changed in that situation?

The rulebook is pretty vague - it basically says any infraction that "impedes" a clear scoring chance can result in a penalty shot being awarded. That opens up a lot of possibilities. The general standard is when a foul is committed on a breakaway (basically, if the defending player is definitely a step behind the attacker), and the shot is not released/significantly impacted. Nothing about shooting motion or anything like that.

I actually can't listen to Romanuk any more. I think I'm gonna start watching the opposition broadcasts when he's on

With Greg Millen + Romanuk it almost feels like watching a neutral broadcast instead of a regional broadcast.

If he bothers you that much, the opposition broadcasts will bother you much more (unless you like huge homers for the opposition).
