Ok, but otherwise you're really agreeing with me, or me with you...

Well, sure, if they add Stamkos or Matthews, they probably don't start Nylander on the 2nd line. Outside of that, I think they do.

What is it about this "Flashback" feature that calls for cringe-worthy historic footage of mediocre goalies?

Is it in 4K? I understand that its impossible to enjoy hockey without it now.

I've been told that too.

Crosby doing everything he can to drag Pittsburgh kicking and screaming into a playoff spot.

Depressing to be a fan of the Blue and White!  :'(

They promised pain, and pain is what they are delivering.

Yup. They're doing exactly as they told us to expect they would.

I still expected to have a better record with Babcock!  :(

He can teach structure, but can't teach talent.

Truth be told, I expected far more of these blowouts so far this season. They've been competitive far more nights than not - and I'd pin that on Babcock.

I don't think you're alone, but I also think people really over-estimated how much a coach can elevate a team. At the end of the day, even the best coach in the world can really only coach his team to the best possible version of themselves and their talent level. For the Leafs, that's still going to be a pretty bad team. And, truthfully, that's what Babcock as done. There haven't been a lot of nights like this one. They've been competitive and a much harder team to play against than they were under Carlyle. They just don't have the talent to turn that effort into success. They've largely been their best possible selves. It's just that their best possible selves is still a bottom 5 team.

No, he can't teach talent, however, he needs to bring out the best of every player.  I'm disappointed that he's not using his players to their strengths.  This roster needs to trap, trap, trap, to have any hope of success!

No way in hell Phaneuf pinches like that if I'm coaching.  I would have benched him on that first Ottawa goal!

Karlsson has 59 points in 53 games.  He's on pace to hit 90 points this year.  The last time a defenseman did that was Ray Bourque in 93/94.

And Bourque was 20th in the league then. Karlsson is currently 2nd in league scoring. Since some people have a hard time calling him the best defenceman in the league I'm just going to call him the best NHL player who doesn't play forward or goalie.

So I know that it gets thrown out there too much, but is Karlsson generational?

That word means different things to different people. To me Sid and Ovi are the only generational players in the league, with McDavid having that type of potential. The term though is also somewhat biased against defenders and goalies.

Karlsson's really impressed me this season. I think it was late last year there was a discussion about him and I said in a general ranking he'd probably fall in the 3-5 range of defenders for me, but this season he's clearly leading the pack. And that means there's a solid chance he wins his 3rd Norris trophy by the time he's 26 years old. I can't check but I imagine there's not a lot of defencemen in the history of the league who can say that. That's 3 in 5 seasons, and a pretty serious Achilles injury/recovery that took place in the years he didn't win.

I remembered at the beginning of hte season I was worried when they were signing/trading these "nhl-quality" players (Boyes, Arcobello, Winnik, Matthias, Parenteau, Spaling) and thinking that they'd be too good for a top three pick.  I also thought Lupul could put up 50 points.

And now I laugh and I laugh.

Oh to be young again.
