Leafs talking to Kiprusoff's agent

If the Leafs can get him at a cheap price, he would be able to help Reimer and Scrivens towards and into the playoffs.  I would have a problem if they were to acquire Kiprusoff and make him the #1 goalie, just because Reimer and Scrivens have done pretty good jobs.

I don't like the rumors that they're discussing a possible extension for Kiprusoff for another year at $6M?  Would you really want this guy for another 2 years at a cap hit like that?  Paying him that much money he'd have to be the #1 goalie and based on his recent injury woes and play on the ice, he's not looking like a #1.

Apparently (per Dreger this AM) the Leafs offered a 3rd. I'm okay with that.

I'd really like to understand why Nonis would want to disrupt our youngish goalies? I get that Kipper has lots of experience and all that, but I'm a bit concerned about the issues and choice here.

I would keep the assets for another deal, that made more sense. It should prove interesting how the next day plays out either way.

I like Scrivens but he's a complete wreck with rebounds and handling the puck. He's been fine but he needs work. Really though, if either Reimer or Scrivens get hurt, it's nice to know there's another guy.

Do you really need a 5.8 million 3rd guy for that role? Seems kind of wacky to me.

the leafs should just let Reimer get playoff experience that would be a crucial part of his development... he is a young goalie and the more playoff experience he gets now the better he will be in the future

No, but if it's just going to be unused cap space anyway it doesn't really matter.

Leafs gm, D.Nonis spoke with Kiprusoff's agent, Larry Kelly yesterday. It's likely Nonis will speak directly with Kipper today.#tradecentre

I mean, I suppose if Kipper and his agent say he is probably leaving the NHL next season, sure. That's why they're talking to them, but if he is going to stick around next season to collect his 1.5, I'd explore other options, personally.

I am not crazy over a possible 2 year extension at whatever the cost - he will be 38 at the end of the contract.  It would be okay if he comes to the Leafs this season to help Reimer and Scrivens prepare for the playoffs, then after that have the role as goaltending coach/trainer to help develop future Leaf goalies.  Anything other than that would be a waste of assets and money.

Even then though, as was noted elsewhere, worst comes to worst and the Leafs could use one of the compliance buy-outs on him. Also because waiving his NTC means he wouldn't have it for next season(I think) he could be a valuable chip to trade if he does rebound.

So there's some legit upside to the move and very little downside.

The Leafs certainly wouldn't have to but if they asked Reimer for his 2 cents and he was on board, I'm good.

From his interviews, Reimer strikes me as a really kind, humble guy; I'm pretty confident he'd let a total stranger borrow a kidney if they asked nicely.

Just a point of clarification - Kiprusoff does not have an NTC. The way his was structured, it expired at the end of last season.

Well there you go. Unless he's so bad that he's unmovable despite his low cost in real dollars there's basically no risk beyond leaving Ben Scrivens to fend for himself in the woods.

I see it like this. If the Leafs sign Kipper, few different scenarios play out.

1. They deal Scrivens because they aren't convinced on him long term.
2. They keep Scrivens and stick with 3 goalies for the balance.
3. They see Kipper as someone who would give them a better chance to go a couple of rounds (or more?) in the playoffs, giving them more of a chance to assess their young personal in action as opposed to a 1-and-done playoff.
4. They keep an extension of Kipper as an "option" based on his performance - to see how much he has left? If he looks really good, maybe Scrivens becomes expendable. If he looks done, they simply don't pick up the option.

As long as the price is reasonable, a deal probably makes sense.
