Leafs talking to Kiprusoff's agent

I kind of hope Nonis is making known his talking to Kiprusoff's agent just to make Mike Gillis wet his pants.

Gillis just traded for Roy... that's something, if he was indeed holding out for Bozak.

I think that's the end of the Luongo-Toronto possibility.

How about Jussi Rynnas factor. Just pure speculation on my part, but as mentioned in Marlies thread, there is a report from Finland that he is poised to join Karpat Oulu for the next season. Given Rynnas age he grew up watching Kipprusoff in his prime and I guess he was icon all over Finland. Maybe it is an attempt to keep Rynnas in Toronto, who knows.

Rynnas hasn't exactly been lighting it up with the Marlies, why would the Leafs be desperate to keep him?

I do not recall the source, but wasn?t he actually assesed as the most naturally gifted of all our young netminders. Regardless of his current troubles.

But then ends up not acquiring either goalie?  That would be awesome.  Screw with Gillis AND Feaster at the same time.  ;D

It strikes me as pretty unlikely that if Rynnas isn't happy being on the Marlies that Kiprusoff blocking his way on the Leafs would make him feel better about his situation.

Maybe Rynnas just wants to gaze upon the face of Finnish goaltending.

If Nonis trades any asset for Kipper he should be committed. We finally have at the very minimum, one very good to excellent NHL goaltender (Reimer) and a competent backup (Scrivens). Goaltending is quite literally the last thing this team needs to address.

Thankfully I think this is all Dreger's doing ginning up talk to keep TSN's ratings high.

If Nonis operates like Burke did, any trade will be completely out of the blue and something that wasn't in the rumour mill at all.

Who wouldn't?

Maybe I'm just biased, but when I think of Finnish goalies the first thing that comes to mind is Toskala and I shudder.

Huh-uh.  That look is Finnish Irony -- something is going on in there, but you'll never know what.  Believe me, I live among the largest community of Finns outside Suomi.  They are a brooding, inscrutable race.

With one of the highest suicide rates in the world! They're used to long hard winters and cold examinations of the bleakness of life but playing for the Calgary Flames crosses the line into cruelty at some point.

Apparently (per Dreger this AM) the Leafs offered a 3rd. I'm okay with that.

I'd really like to understand why Nonis would want to disrupt our youngish goalies? I get that Kipper has lots of experience and all that, but I'm a bit concerned about the issues and choice here.

I think it's a great idea.  The leafs will not be able to go far with their current goaltenders.  I think Nonis is realizing that neither Reimer or Scrivens is the goalie of the future.  Kipper is just board and done playing on awful teams.  How he looks now isn't a concern to me.

If we can get him for a 2nd or 3rd I would do it in a heartbeat.  He would be the #1.

I guess I see this situation very differently.  Nothing I have witnessed has made me put any confidence in Reimer.  He still has brutal rebound control and that's a big concern.

The price I would pay for either of these vets is Kiprusoff: peanuts, and Luongo: less than nothing.

Even for free Luongo's contract is a mess.  Do we even believe all the crap that people have been throwing around about offers and bidding wars?  I have a suspicion it's all hot air and Gillis at this point could be trying to get people to move up from nothing to something (by planting the rumours himself?)

If the rumours about Kadri being on the block before are true, Nonis should pat himself on the back for dodging that bullet and move on from this foolish quest to land the holy grail veteran goaltender.

I don't see the point in giving up anything of significance for Kiprusoff.  We're not serious contenders this year, now isn't the time to spend the future on rentals.  It's not even guaranteed that he's much better than Reimer or Scrivens depending on how much value you put on playoff experience (and then do you play him and deny our young guys the experience, or use him as a backup?).

Absolutely.  Our goaltending isn't great.
