Don't think there is another player in the league who takes so many needless penalties and most in the opposing end as Hyman does.

Coming into today 470 NHLers took more minor penalties than Hyman this season. So yeah, I'm sure I could think of a few.

Let?s ignore Hyman missed a good chunck of the season to start. And the rank means zero unless you?re looking up needless penalties.

azzuri thinking he's the worst in the league at it is totally meaningful.

If anyone thinks that Hyman takes too many penalties while forechecking do you think that has anything to do with the fact that he's practically the only Leaf who does it consistently/effectively?

Not really sure I can agree with you on that one. This was only Hyman's 4th penalty of the season, and I can't offhand remember any other O-zone ones he's taken this year. I can easily name another player in the league who is way worse on that count this year and he's a Leaf....could you be mistaking Hyman for Kerfoot?

I'm not talking just this year.
Well he did have 65 pims last year so won't argue there.
And what a job by Matthews on that goal. Props to Keefe for putting JT and Matthews together.

I don't agree that he's the only Leaf that forecheck consistently. I don't recall where he takes the penalties tho.

He was definitely taking more last year than this year but even then he ranked 92nd in the league in minor penalties.

But he was also 43rd in penalties drawn and that's what we call a positive.

20 of that was for that hit on McAvoy that also cost him a 2 game suspension. Another 5 of it was for a fight. The remaining 40 was slightly above his career average, which is extremely low for NHL forwards.

Yeah last year he lead the Leafs by 20 mins. I didn't have an issue with him last year with penalties and sure don't this year. 8 mins in his 22nd game? No worries.

I'm not just talking about this year. He seems to take a lot of penalties in the opposing ends and yes that's due to his forechecking etc.
Love his work ethic, hustle etc but usually clutching grabbing because he's not the fastest guy. Don't mind some penalties but the one he just took in the 1st no need for that.
Get on your high horse and try and get the puck.

I'll agree with you on this penalty. It was a bad lazy penalty and not only him, the team can't be taking those kind of penalties.

For his career when compared against all other NHL forwards who played during that period of time and had a minimum of 50 games played, Hyman ranks 218th in penalties taken/60.

I'm not suggesting he ought to be a Lady Byng nominee but I think characterizing him as being such a habitual offender that there is "no other player in the league who takes so many needless penalties" is just flat out wrong.

Nice of SN to give Dubas props for staying behind with Mikheyev. Souperman's agent said he's never seen a GM act like that. Nice, Dubas.

Spezza is really good at gaining entry to the offensive zone on the 2U.  He just barrels up the middle and usually it works.
