Maple Leafs Training Camp 2024-25 Thread

I think Kampf can work out as a 3C if he has quality linemates. I don't mind the looks of:
Knies Matthews Domi
McMann Tavares Marner
Robertson Kampf Nylander
Pacioretty Holmberg Jankrok

But Nylander at 11.5M on the 3rd line is likely a waste..

I've never had a problem with Nylander on the 3rd line. I'm a big "spread the wealth" guy. At the end of the day he'll end up getting enough minutes one way or another. The waste is putting a potential 100-point winger with a 20-point centre.

I don't hate it. You have offensive threats on either side of the wing and a centre who might have better point totals playing with better players. Let's see what happens, may as well experiment now.

Berube pulled a Keefe.

If that's all the time he gets he'd better go to "chief" and ask why.
Because he's not good there and they've noticed in practice that he's not going to get it.

WTF? I certainly hope we don't continue to regurgitate the same old BS. I don't care what the salaries are, ice lines to have the best chances of team success. No one gets better with two lines playing most of the game. The core 4 need to carry their lines. 3 lines that can score does not seem difficult to compose with this group of players. How come an NHL coach cannot seem to figure it out?

I am also pissed that it appears Lily is out of the top 6, seems ridiculous to me.

Sorry to play to what if card but how good would this team look if they still had O'Reilly. He?s exactly what this team is missing.

I would be more inclined to think that this is just the nature of the beast vs. what we actually hoped for. If multiple coaches say it's a duck, it's probably a duck.

And tbh, Lily's only saving grace is that he's a right shot. He's pulling a Dermott and stagnating imo.

Timmins waived?
Holmberg waived?
Haknapaa to LTIR?
Pac?
Lorentz?
Jankrok trade?

With everyone healthy, we cannot keep all our toys. Hakanpaa "thinks" he's good. Due to cap constraints I "think" he cannot explicitly say he's good to go.

Holmberg getting waived would be a huge mistake. I'd trade Kampf and Jarnkrok first. Lorentz and Patches are getting deals. I think he's going to be a fit with JT

Timmins seems to have bumped Liljegren to #7 as he also played well with Benoit last season
If Nylander is going to the wing, a top 9 winger is expendable
Robertson's 2 good preseason games has increased his trade value for a trade he asked for.
With Hakanpaa & Dewar on LTIR, there is no waivers gun to Treliving's head
though Rifai may have played well enough that he's a risk to not clear waivers.

Flip Robertson & Liljegren for a 3rd line center who can play 2 ways ($3.875 cap space)
Team gets a little tougher with those two lighter players elsewhere
Rifai gets waivers protection for now
Nylander is in his 'natural' 40 goal position

Rumors were out there at the draft that they were floating a trade of Liljegren
I don't mind Liljegren but the facts and training camp events are lining up that this is a possibility to cure a few perceived issues with this roster.
Maybe that is why the experiment is ending so quickly.

Hap and Dewar are practicing in full. Lily just signed an extension and is needed. We?ll know in a week how this goes.

Timmins also played well in preseason last year...got hurt...and then looked like crap most of the rest of the year.

I'm still skeptical about Robertson as far as a full season performance goes, but he's certainly made it much tougher to trade him. Still have no idea where he falls in the line-up if Pacioretty signs.

This is Robertson's first healthy summer in awhile: seems to have made a difference for his mobility.

This is Robertson's first non-Keefe coach in the NHL: seems to have made it easier to simplify the game and leverage his motor instead of making him think about what he's doing wrong all the time because Keefe liked 4D chess puck control*.

For all the LWs that are bigger and stronger and more defensively capable than he is, Robertson is the only one who has been scoring with regularity in limited minutes. His shot on full load is a frickin' laser**, but he's also one of our few NHL players (let alone being nominally a prospect still) that has actually figured out the quick release and shooting accurately with sub-optimal puck placement and janky body positioning. I can see where he has gotten tips and patterns to exploiting goalies that Jason Robertson has figured out in the league, so he's skipped a learning curve too.

* Seriously, every new player stepping into the Leafs had a significant hurdle in learning the system after success at previous NHL stops.

** granted, most players at the AHL/NHL level can truly put some spicy mustard on a shot given all the time and space, but the NHL is harder because they usually have zero time to wind up and the goalies are pretty keyed in to all the shooting cues

We have to move two forwards eventually if Lorentz and Pacioretty are going to get contracts.

We are 1.07 over the cap right now with 13F and 8D.  Dewar and Hakanpaa likely both start on LTIR and that leaves us with 1.55M to sign Pacioretty and Lorentz.  Coming out of camp, Robertson has made it easy to not move him.  Holmberg provides center versatility.  Kampf is a defense first center. Jarnkrok is a guy of multiple skills but nothing individually exceptional.

Freeing up 2.1M instead of the 800K of a Holmberg seems like a better way to make an easier roster decision in the short term.

Said it since last year, Jarnkrok is the guy that needs to go. He doesn't do enough to justify 2.1M. Easily replaced for cheaper.

I?m hoping for the best for Robertson and his shot is a laser.  But every year we see preseason guys who excel and come back down to earth when the regular season starts.  Robertson has had a bunch of wide open chances. He?ll probably have fewer of those when the defensive intensity ratchets up.
