Maple Leafs Training Camp 2024-25 Thread

I think it's a near lock that he's signing. That's 15 NHL forwards once all signed (Pacioretty, Lorentz) and healthy (Dewar).

Do we have to post in all-caps to show we're on board?

Just kidding, herman!  Looking forward to seeing if the new playstyle can get these guys over the hump.

Some confirmation of what I've suspected all along: Nylander is unaffected by social media slander libel because he can't read.

lmao I'm dying.

I'm been trying to fight off saying this because training camp and the roster is not quite done.

I think the goaltending is better and deeper than last years team.

I'm optimistic the defense is going to be better.
Tanev is an upgrade on Brodie. I expect more of the same from Rielly - maybe better with Tanev.
If Benoit was paired with McCabe (for comparison purposes with last year), he should progress with a 1st NHL season behind him.
OEL was a good #5 on a Cup winner and should help with his point shot to improve upon 40 yr old Giordano.
Timmins has looked ok in preseason and played well with Benoit last season. Liljegren worked hard over the summer to improve.
Not light years better but improved. Hakanpaa is the wildcard for PK improvement if he's able.

I think the forwards are better though still shaking out what they will eventually be.
I expect roughly more of the same from the core 4. Tavares may show his age some but looked ok in preseason so far. The Nylander experiment at center is probably the biggest wildcard there.
Domi looks like he'll carry on from where he left off
Knies looks like he'll break out at least some.
Robertson seems determined to be a better player. I'm not totally sold on him but he's trying.
A full season of McMann will help them if he can stay healthy
Holmberg looks improved.
I like what I've seen of Lorentz better than Gregor
I don't anticipate a dramatic fall off from Kampf, Jarnkrok or Reaves
They were the second highest scoring team in the NHL and they'll be up there this season.

All the changes to the systems and personnel will probably cause them some trouble over the first 20 games.

If they maintain reasonable health, I think they'll do better than the oddsmakers are currently predicting and finish higher than they did last year. Their roster construction makes them a tougher opponent in the playoffs. I've seen some criticism of what they've done. I'm more optimistic as they seem to have attempted to credibly address every issue within the constraints of the cap.

Might be a little early to be saying that stuff but that is how it feels to me.

I posted clips of Hakanpaa playing with the C squad previously

"asked if he's cleared for skating"
"I think so." How could he not know that medical decision definitively?
Wouldn't the doctor check him out, check with him and advise him before clearing him?
Odd answer.

9th dman yesterday who isn't even playing with a D partner yet (200 days after injury, under a new system/coach with a new team) and he's going to start with the team next week?

I don't think so.

To me, the initials of his most likely D partner to start the season seem to be L.T.I.R.

Berube pulled a Keefe.

If that's all the time he gets he'd better go to "chief" and ask why.

Also, with Domi and Nylander on the same line - who's 3C?  Holmberg?

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Domi - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Holmberg - Jarnkrok
McMann/Patches - Kampf - Reaves?

I'm...not sure I like that.

Yeah if it's not Nylander at C then it should be Domi either on a heavily sheltered 3rd line or being propped up by Marner like he was during the playoffs while Matthews was out.

I really don't want to see Holmberg or Kampf at 3C for a significant stretch of time.

Or maybe, and hear me out, he's just not a centreman. Like that is also a possibility right?

I think Kampf can work out as a 3C if he has quality linemates. I don't mind the looks of:
Knies Matthews Domi
McMann Tavares Marner
Robertson Kampf Nylander
Pacioretty Holmberg Jankrok

But Nylander at 11.5M on the 3rd line is likely a waste..

First round of cuts, and that comes with Abruzzese being the first Leaf to go on waivers.

One interesting thing here is seeing the unsigned Brandon Lisowsky being reassigned to the Marlies. It was expected that he would be going back to the WHL for his overager year. Maybe that's still the plan, although they could also still be considering an AHL deal.
