Marlies Talk 14/15 | aka What's Nylander up to?

Sam Carrick got a 5 minute major for boarding...fought after the hit (Leduc got an instigator for the fight).  He gets out of the box and has to fight a second time and gets ejected for getting 3 majors in a single game.

So in summary on Nylander (as he picked up another assist for a 3-point game).

27 points in 33 games in the AHL
10 points in 7 games at the World Juniors
20 points in 21 games in the SEL

That's a pretty successful post-draft season.

Marlies finish the season with a 4 game road trip starting Tuesday in Iowa against the Wild. They will face Milwaukee at the Bradley Center on Friday night. That game will effectively determine who gets the 8th spot.

Tie-breakers:  Points > ROW > Points in season series

Hamilton: Up by 3 points.  Hamilton has 3 games left.  The Marlies need 4 points to win outright and 3 points to go to a tiebreaker.  The Marlies have 35 ROW to Hamilton's 33.  The Marlies need two wins (or a win and a Hamilton loss) to lock in the wins tie-breaker.  Hamilton holds the season series tiebreaker.

Milwaukee: Up by 2 points.  Milwaukee has 2 games left.  The Marlies need 2 points to go to tiebreakers.  The Marlies hold the ROW tiebreaker so they just need to pick up two points out of their remaining 4 games to clinch.

Lake Erie: Up by 5 points.  Lake Erie has 4 games left.  The Marlies hold the ROW tiebreaker but can clinch it with a single win/Erie non-ROW win.

Stranger things have happened but the Marlies have pretty much clinched the postseason at this point.  Even with having to play 4 games on the road.

The Marlies could go 0-0-4, 1-1-2, 2-2-0 and clinch the 8th spot.  That's pretty good odds.  Especially with Iowa up next.

If the Marlies get some special teams support they could give a lot of teams a headache.

Pretty remarkable that they've essentially made it to the playoffs with awful special teams the entire year.

29th PP
28th PK

So did we ever get to the bottom of whether or not two of Nylander's middle names are Michael and Junior or if one of his middle names is Michael Junior, thereby sort of missing the point of the whole "Jr." distinction?

Great run by the Marlies here. They've even put themselves in a position to pass Chicago for 7th in the conference, they play them on the final game of the season.

The TJ Brennan trade is finally starting to pay off. He started very slowly (1 point in 9 games) but is on fire as of late (11 points in 7 games).

MATT FRATTIN collected a goal and an assist playing in his 100th AHL game
GREG MCKEGG scored his 20th and 21st  goals of the season, opening the scoring for the Marlies and surpassing his career high for goals in a season (previous was 19)
BRENDAN MIKKELSON tied his career high for goals, scoring his eighth late in the second period
BYRON FROESE scored the second goal for the Marlies, his 17th of the season. He now has 24 points in the past 23 games
BRENDAN LEIPSIC collected an assist, pushing his point total in the past five games to 10 points.
TJ BRENNAN collected an assist, he now has 11 points in his last seven games.

It'd be awesome if Froese can develop into a solid NHL player.  Granted, Brennan is racking up points like mad and yet it seems AHL is the ceiling for him...

I don't know if it's been posted before, but here's a little profile of Froese and his story from about a month ago:

William Andrew Michael Junior Nylander Altelius

I'm on the side of the fence that says Junior is a middle name (Michael and Junior), rather than a generational title based on the location of the name Junior relative to the surnames (not at the very end) and the fact that his father's name is Michael Gunnar Nylander and does not meet the exact match requirement in first, middle, and last names in order to correctly affix Jr. to the name.

Given Name(s): William Andrew Michael Junior
Surname(s): Nylander Altelius
