Marlies Talk 14/15 | aka What's Nylander up to?

Marlies came out with a number of huge chances and then Grand Rapids comes down the wing and goes high glove side.  3-1.  I think that might be the game right there.

Bibeau just made a ridiculous glove save on a cross-ice one timer.  He better be the go-to-starter for the Marlies next year.

The Marlies play an uptempo pressure game while trailing, I can't figure out why they don't play that game constantly, it's bound to wear your opponents down.

They had a lot more energy in the home games, but seem to have left most of it in Toronto.

I figured they would slump a little after losing for the first time after a 9-game winning streak, but this was game 5. No more excuses.

Looking forward to a Marlies team full of prospects next year, 5 or 6 guys that are career minor leaguers should be moved out.

I also really want a coaching change.

The Marlies were the underdog, so my expectations weren't too high. But to blow a 2-0 lead like that is pretty rough.

I was never crazy about the Dineen promotion. The Marlies are the best coaching gig in the entire AHL. It should be a position that the Leafs use to recruit the best possible coaching option out there. Giving it to somebody just because they've been a good soldier for the team as an assistant coach seems like a poor option.

Keefe obviously makes a lot of sense for next season.

This must be what it feels like to be a Sens fan.

I've wanted Keefe since they picked up Dubas, think he would be excellent with the Marlies and then move to the big club after a 3 to 4 year development cycle.

If it makes people feel any better I still don't buy that AHL team success means much.

How do you figure that? Seems to me that the best AHL coaching gig would be the one that offers the best chance at advancement and while the Leafs seem to have put together some decent AHL talent it strikes me as unlikely that it would be at the top of anyone's list.

I think AHL success can be important as long as it's young kids leading the charge, like it was with the Marlies this season. It's just that the really good AHL teams usually aren't led by kids. But look at teams like Detroit and Tampa. Guys like Tatar, Jurco, Andersson, Glendening, Sheahan, Johnson, Palat, Killorn all played major roles in their AHL championships and I'm sure it benefited them.

I think that just being the coach of the Marlies gives you a lot more exposure than most teams. Particularly when you're labeled an "up and coming coach". Toronto obviously doesn't exactly cover the AHL all that much, but you still get more media attention than most if not all other cities.

Then there's just the fact that it's been said multiple times that the Marlies have resources at their disposal that rival some NHL teams. And I'd imagine that the Leafs would be willing to pay their AHL coaches a little more than some other organizations would.

Plus you'd get to live in Toronto.
