Men's Olympic hockey

And Oshie wins it. These international shootouts are a lot more exciting with that rule.

LK Healy - the book is out on Bobrovsky...skate at him slowly.

I think the US would have won that after the first set of shooters had they used Kane instead of the second two shooters (JVR and Pavelski?).

I dunno -- JVR has been incredible this year for the leafs in the shootout.  Has Kane been better this year?

When is Kane not an insane stick handler?

That Oshie shootout clinic will finally give Toews' one in the World Juniors less play time.

Thought the Russians took the play to the Americans.  I thought for sure Kane was going to score on that breakaway in OT.

Olympic hockey proving once again why it's so great.  Also proving why the need for fighting in the game is such a foolish notion.

There are many ways to score in a shootout.  Just because one guy is a better stick handler than another doesn't mean he scores more consistently in the shootout.

So did I. I think the key to beating USA is to play smart, disciplined hockey. You're not going to outhit them and trying to lay a big hit or match them physically will just lead to PP opportunities, where USA can beat you.

5 on 5 they don't have the skill or speed that Canada has. Better to use your size and speed to win battles along the boards and in the corners and get some traffic in front of the net to screen Quick.

being an American that was so sweet. Kane is `1 for 11 in shootouts this year. At least JVR got a chance. He and Phil played real well.. Just an incredible hockey game. No other sport can touch the amazing sport called hockey

Current Standings, with each team having one game left.

1. Finland 6 points, +9
2. Sweden 6 points, +3
3. USA 5 points, +7
4. Canada 6 points, +8
---
5. Russia 4 points, +2
6. Czech Republic 3 points, +2
7. Switzerland 3 points, 0
8. Slovenia, 3 points, -1
9. Latvia 0 points, -3
10. Norway 0 points, -7
11. Slovakia 0 points, -8
12. Austria 0 points, -10

Someone correct me if I'm wrong regarding Canada at 4; my guess was that division leaders automatically go 1-2-3.

So the only reason he makes the team is because "he can play with Crosby", and now they're already not playing him with Crosby. Awesome.

Who are you quoting there? Kunitz made the team because he was top 10 in the league in scoring last year and top 20 this year. Obviously playing with Crosby helps but he's been one of the top scoring wingers in the league the last two years.

Um, nope. I'm pretty sure he was chosen because they thought he had built-in chemistry with the most important player on the team. You can try to rationalize it with point totals or whatever else, but I don't see how anyone can doubt the above reason is the main reason.

He's not as good as Giroux. Bottom line.

Yeah and to add to that, I'd say playing with Crosby more than "helps" - he's a good player but he's not an Olympian without Crosby.

I posted it awhile back in the Canada team thread, but prior to '12-'13 (Crosby had a lot of injuries so Crosby/Kunitz never really got a ton of consistent time together prior to last season) Kunitz was a .66 pts/game player.  Since Crosby's been healthy and Kunitz has played solely with Crosby, Kunitz is a 1.08 PPG player.  Those are stats as of January 7, so give or take a little.

To me it comes down to - would Kunitz be an Olympian if Crosby wasn't there?  I say no, he's not good enough to be.  Getzlaf or Perry would be without the other.  Sharp is another one I'm unsure of.

I thought Kessel looked pretty dangerous all game for the U.S.  He was one of the few consistently getting shots, even if they were long distance ones they're worth taking in a tournament like this with his release.  I've noticed Kessel's speed, but I feel like the big ice has really made JVR able to fly.
