Men's Olympic hockey

A truly great hockey game, but the game being decided by Oshie and Kovalchuk taking shot after shot was a little much. Exciting, yes. A great way to decide an Olympic hockey game? Not so much.

EDIT: TJ Oshie is now an instant America hero...

Sharp is another one I'm unsure of.

In defence of Sharp, Yzerman has gone on the record in the past as stating his versatility is a huge plus. He can play all three forward positions, man the point on the power play, and is one of the more dangerous penalty killers in the league.

I imagine the fact he's lighting it up this season was the deal-clincher.

Um, nope. I'm pretty sure he was chosen because they thought he had built-in chemistry with the most important player on the team.

So why didn't they take one of Crosby's linemates in '10? Why'd they take Kunitz and not Pascal Dupuis? More to the point if the belief is that building chemistry with Crosby is as easy as is implied then why weren't the best hockey minds in Canada unable to see that?

There's a difference between an assertion and an argument. Just repeating that you think that Yzerman ignored that Kunitz has been one of the top scoring wingers in the league the last two years doesn't make it so.

They didn't in 2010, and the popular belief seems to be they had trouble finding Crosby linemates that could help get him going. And yes, Kunitz has been a top-scoring winger, since he started playing with Crosby. Hence that whole "chemistry" thing.

Clearly there was more to some of the decisions than just points, or Martin St. Louis wouldn't have been an injury replacement.

But nobody is saying that his chemistry with Crosby was irrelevant to his selection, just saying that that it wasn't, as you claimed, the only reason he was chosen.

Kessel with two goals less than 5 minutes into game against Slovenia. The first one was of the highlight variety.

Sidney who?  8)

Kessel may easily win scoring title at the Olympics, he is red hot over there. Hopefully he stays that once he returns to Toronto

Kessel has really risen to new heights in the past year or so. His outstanding play so far at these Olympic Games really just confirms that. He and JVR should be the go-to guys for the Leafs for years and years to come. You really can't ask for a better duo to lead the way.

Glad the Leafs have signed him for "only" 8M. I believe he may get even a little bit better.

You can't ask... but I'd trade them straight up for Malkin and Crosby ^_^

Good job Slovaks, Russia will have to play qualifying round. Both Canada and Finland advance into QF directly regardless of the game result
