nhl_canes: The Canes have signed defenseman Tim Gleason to a four-year, $16 million extension: http://t.co/FAHbIL3M

Weird. Gleason would have been a great trade chip for them at the deadline.

DarrenDreger: The Winnipeg Jets today announced they have traded forward Akim Aliu to the Calgary Flames for defenceman John Negrin.

Potential sign and trade?

Sharks did it with Setoguchi this past summer.  Sens did it with Hossa.  It doesn't happen often, but it's not entirely out of the realm of possibilities.

To be honest, if I'm trading for Gleason, I'd give up more for him now knowing he's locked in for 4 years reasonably.

Not impossible, but, the full NTC in the first 2 years of his new deal lead me to believe that's not the intention here.

I don't like that contract for Gleason to be honest, he rarely cracks twenty points and is a career minus player.  He brings a nasty physical edge at times, but four million per is a lot of coin.

It doesn't really happen with pending UFAs though, both of your examples were for restricted free agents.

Sounds like Schenn... ;)

Touche, although Schenn is cheaper, younger and has more upside.

Yeah, that was what the cheeky wink was for. :)

Scratch Liles, now Gleason... The price for D gets heavier.  :)

Beauchemin too.  He was a potential trade target but re-upped in Anaheim.

Indeed... How quickly I forgot.

It's also sounding more and more likely that Suter won't be moved before the deadline.

Awesome... I like this whole idea of accumulating D-Men during the off-season and spinning a guy or two off at the deadline when they're in greater demand... Hey, isn't that what AA is doing for the Jays with relief pitchers?  :)

Yeah, Schenn is younger and has more upside/room to grow but after thinking about this, the Gleason comparison is a pretty fair one I think. - Both solid, shut-down guys (most of the time) who contribute marginally offensively. "The next "Adam Foote," I'm not seeing it but if we've got Gleason 2.0, hey, I'll take it.

What is the consensus on Gleason anyway? Solid middle pairing guy? If so then I'll buy that as a comparison for Schenn in his prime.

thenyrangers: the #NYR have traded Erik Christensen and a 7th round pick to the Minnesota Wild for forward Casey Wellman who is being assigned to @CTWhale

thenyrangers: The  pick heading to Minnesota in Wellman deal is a conditional 7th round draft choice in 2013

So Gleason has an agreement to not be traded before his new contract takes effect, no sign and trade for him.
