Minor Offseason Moves

Habs trade Shaw to Blackhawks for picks

This seems like a pretty great trade for Chicago. Montreal clearing cap space for a big Duchene offer?

There?s speculation they?re going hard after Lee - which would mean they probably know they?re out on Duchene, but also have a second significant target in their sights.

The Rangers are another example of a team that's kinda bizarre to see in cap hell. Like I get they got Panarin and Trouba this summer but still you'd think they'd have a decent amount of cap space. Those Staal/Smith/Shattenkirk contract's + Giradi's buyout are killing them. Lundqvist is pretty overpaid too at this point.

I thought they should keep tearing down at least one more season to add some longevity to their build and clear off the cap sheet, but it looks like they really want to maximize the remaining two years of Lundqvist (Panarin?s timing, draft lottery luck). For a capped out team, they?re precariously built as there isn?t much depth behind the four shiny headliners.

I think when high end talent gets to UFA status you have to take the chance at signing them like the Leafs did last year with JT. Rangers just happened to sign 2 guys for around  20 mill. Don't know if either will be worth it in the long run but high end players rarely get to UFA status before the decline.

You still have to be sure of your current core and prospect pipeline before committing to UFA stars.

Yup. Jumping the gun on adding expensive pieces before your youth have shown anything is a good way to get stuck as a middle of the pack at best team.

For sure but we're not talking just "normal" ufa's here. Talking elite talent and regardless of the Leafs core, they were going to take a shot at JT. If their core was crap, he wouldn't have signed here.

This should cap Dermott in the 2M range short term.

Dermott makes his own comparables and he chooses Erik Karlsson

Why stop there? How about a Nik Lidstrom/Bobby Orr hybrid?

Pretty sure Karlsson's contract is more than those 2 guys

Yeah but if those are his comparables in terms of skill couldn't he ask for $20m? [emoji23]

C'mon man let's stay in the real world here, max he could ask for is 20% of the cap

Kevin Shattenkirk is being bought out by the Rangers.
I think we can get him for sub-1M for a year. Even in his diminished state, he?s still better than Schmaltz, Holl.

Yeah if he's cheap I'd definitely take him for the 3RD spot. Problem is a lot of his value also comes from PP minutes and he's got Rielly and Barrie in front of him. The coaching staff would need to decide if they think one of those 3 could play on one of the half walls, which isn't entirely crazy.

He also can?t skate backwards
