NHL Draft Lottery

Somebody at the Edmonton Sun needs to check what they are reposting from Twitter.

There is some pretty classless stuff going on there.

I swear if Katz brings his kid on stage when he announces the McDavid pick I'm going to throw something at my TV.

He'll probably let him make the actual pick this time.

Well, the important thing is that he didn't just soak the city for hundreds of millions of dollars so at least this isn't reason to doubt the concept of justice in the universe.

Well, your first point depends on whether you want Strome more than Hanifin.  I am indifferent on that, we could use either one, very well.

Not entirely. I agree that one of those two is the likely pick but it wouldn't be the craziest thing in the world for the Leafs brass to want to draft a forward regardless and, with Strome off the board, lean towards Marner. So if you'd be equally happy with either Hanifin or Strome I agree that the opportunity to pick one will be the same regardless but I think it's slightly more likely to actually happen if Hanifin is already off the board.

Leaving all the other stuff aside, yes, in fact it would be the craziest thing in the world if we took Marner over Hanifin.

My heart started racing when the Hurricanes' card was set to be revealed, had butterflies when it was the Leafs' turn, punched the couch when it wasn't them, and swore profusely that Edmonton of all teams got him.

I was so disappointed, more so when I found out they had the best shot at him at one point.

I didn't watch the Penguins game, walked away and built the baby's crib instead.

I'm mostly past the Leafs not winning it now, still smarts that it was the Oilers. I mean at this stage it's probably more difficult for them not to have a dynasty...yet with that management, who knows?

Wouldn't be terrible if Leafs could somehow leave the draft with RNH/Draisaitl (for Phaneuf) and 3 first round picks, 2 in the top ten.

That would be a hella-successful draft!

The lottery results do create some trading partners that might work out well for the Leafs. Things can still look pretty good a few years out. Without thinking of what Bozak or Lupul might return (not much) or who the Leafs might pick in 2016 (probably pretty high), they could still end up with a roster that's sorta like this:

JvR - Strome - Nylander
Kadri - Draisaitl - [Marner/Rantanen]
[Marlie] - Holland - [Marlie]
[UFA] - Gauthier - [UFA]

Options in the system at forward: Brown, Johnson, Leivo, Leipsic (gotta be one top-6 guy there).

Rielly - Gardiner
[Marlie] - [Marlie]
[Marlie] - [Marlie]

Options at defense: Kylington (projected to go 25th, somewhere), Percy, Finn, Loov.

Some reason to be optimistic still, even without McDavid.

???How fricken old will I be when McDavid becomes a free agent? Anyone? DOB 1968
Does it matter?  We'll be dead before the Leafs win the Cup again.

Thanks. I needed cheering up.  ;)

But really, he could become a free agent in 7 years if he plays in the NHL next season from my understanding.

And we have been playing that game since 2005.  And when it comes down to it, guys always end up re-signing.
