NHL Draft Lottery

And, with a significant need for improvement on the blue line, do they maybe make a serious run at Phaneuf? There's potential for this to really have played out pretty favourably for the Leafs.

Hopefully one of Phaneuf or Gardiner can be the centerpiece of a deal.  We'll even throw in Polak!

Do you think RNH is a legitimate #1?  What about Draisaitl?  Draisaitl strikes me as the Backes type.  Which would be awesome.  My questions are more about which one do think would be better for the Leafs.

No, RNH strikes me more as an incredible #2 or a #1B. If the Leafs could leave the draft with him and Strome, they'd be pretty set down the middle - I don't expect it to happen, but it's not quite as outlandish as it was half an hour ago. I'm not sure about Draisaitl yet. Haven't seen enough of him.

RNH certainly hasn't done anything to prove he's a #1, but he's also been stuck on a poor team.  If we landed Strome, I'd be pretty happy picking up RNH - he's at least a #2.

I think you have to wait until after the draft and see who is available at 4 don't you?

Perhaps take Hanafin and trade for Draisaitl or RNH?

At the very least I'd imagine it opens up the Pens pick from the Perron deal....

Phaneuf for Yak/Draisaitl + Pitts 1st?

Not enough onour end?

No. I think with the state of the Leafs' system, it doesn't really matter who they pick, they need to add high ceiling young talent through trades, and Phaneuf seems to be as good as gone. If Edmonton is willing to part with either RNH or Draisaitl as part of the deal, that would almost certainly be the best deal the Leafs are offered, and for that reason, they'd need to jump on it regardless of who they end up drafting.

Yeah if they left with RNH and Strome, that frees up the movement of Kadri in a couple of years.  If they draft Strome, you think he plays next year?

Not sure Phaneuf is enough to get Draisaitl + Pitts 1st.  Might have to add a little, or retain a little cap.

Also, there's the question of whether Phaneuf would waive for Edmonton...  NTC/NMC clauses are stupid.

Probably not, no. No need to rush him into the NHL. No prospects get ruined by teams being patient with them. It's impatience that can. The Leafs don't need him next season. Give him another year to grow, etc.

It is his hometown, and, now that they have McDavid, they might not suck as much in the near future.

Honestly, I think they just keep forgetting to print more of those stupid team cards each year, so they keep reusing the golden Edmonton one over and over..

Yeah, hopefully they send him back.  Let him be the #1 option in Erie for a year without McDavid.  My only concern is that the Leafs might look at him like a 1st overall pick and reason that they could keep him up.

Wasn't there a report that there were no Canadian teams on his list of acceptable destinations, though?
