I guess that expires after this season?  That is, he could be included in a draft-day deal (not that I'm eager to dump Panik).

It does, but I'm not sure if that means end of the regular season or the official end of the season, which if midnight on June 30th.

It's at the end of the playoffs.

Didn't see anyone else post this, but another Rumour circulating today is that the Kings are very interested in acquiring Roman Polak.  No mention of a potential retun from the Kings yet on that tidbit of gossip.

LA can give the Leafs their 1st pick this year and Holzer can take Polak's spot in the Leafs line up.

I'd settle for our second from the Bernier deal  :-\

Sportsnet, which broadcasts OHL games, just suggested that Marner is a center.

Now, I've read that he is now, and has been for a bit, a winger.

Are we not under the understanding that Marner is indeed a winger, or have I been outside too long today?

He's been playing wing with Christian Dvorak at C.  Not sure if he can play C but I'm fairly sure that he's been at wing for a significant portion of the season.

So I'm not usually someone to throw out trade ideas but here's something that came to mind that would be a Kessel trade that would be three things:

1. Would be a trade where the team trading for Kessel didn't sacrifice a top young player they were planning to build around.
2. Would be a trade where the Leafs got relatively fair value.
3.  Would be absolutely hilarious.

Anyways, here it is:

To Toronto: Malcolm Subban, 2016 1st round pick and Loui Eriksson
To Boston: Phil Kessel

Boston gets in Kessel the player they hoped they were getting in Eriksson, they trade Subban who it doesn't seem like they're going to give the chance to supplant Rask and they throw in a 1st rounder with less risk on it than this year's. Toronto gets the goalie of the future, another first rounder and an expiring Eriksson who could be flipped again for a 2nd or something.

I don't think that's awful, might be some salary concerns on Boston's end. I also wonder if they would really be all that interested in bringing Phil back. But I do agree with the value-side of it. My basic structure of a Kessel deal would be...

1) a A prospect/young player, but not an A+ prospect/young player like you said
2) 1st round draft pick
3) a B prospect/young player
4) cap space

Subban and the 1st obviously tick the first two boxes. Eriksson could be flipped for a 2nd rounder of somebody a little further along in his development. There's no long-term deals coming back and we aren't eating any of Phil's contract.

Obviously I would like a little more, but I'm coming to the grips that we'll end up a little disappointed in whatever return Kessel brings. That's kind of just the nature of how trades like these usually work out.

Not bad. Maybe add in Seidenberg for salary reasons and we could flip him for a 2nd as well?

I think Seidenberg's got legit value. If he's going to get flipped for picks, Boston would probably just do it themselves.

I'd pass on that unless they were throwing in a 2nd/3rd rounder of their own for us to take that contract. He's got 2 years left at $4mil and apparently the injury he recently came back from has really hampered his skating. So that might not be a very easy contract to flip.

edit: Sorry, he has 3 years left on his deal after this one. Again, yuck. Even with a pick I don't know if I take that, especially with Robidas still on the books.

The fact that they're even trying to move him, despite the fact that they need a top-4 defenceman, should speak volumes about where his play is at right now. Bruins fans are pretty upset at Boston management for extending him at the eventual expense of Boychuk.

PHASE II

To Montreal: Phaneuf, Gauthier, another prospect with a French name, Boston's 1st rounder
To Toronto: PK Subban

:o :o :P :P

The only way you say no to that deal is if McDavid's name mysterious actually had an accent in it.
