Official Ottawa Senators Thread

In fairness to the Bruins and Flames, this is the second time in 4 years that the player has been moved under weird circumstances, so...perhaps where there's smoke there's fire?

Wasn't the "weird circumstance" of his trade out of Boston just that he wanted more money than they wanted to give him?

These players that foster friendships with sick children in Canadian hockey markets are just the wrong fit for our dressing rooms.

Oh and to stay on topic:

So, I know it's old news and settled news at this point but now that the rush of the draft and free agency is over and we can reflect a little bit I feel it's necessary for me to say that the whole Hoffman-Karlsson thing...that's the weirdest goddamn thing that's happened in hockey maybe ever right? Maybe the weirdest thing in sports since Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson?

I don't want to re-hash it necessarily I just feel like I soft sold it because, you know, trying to be decent and the board rules on not talking about personal lives but still.

The Mike Danton story comes to mind here.

Colorado might have a decent shot at Jack Hughes.

I can't wait to see what the attendance looks like at Sens games this season (Leafs games notwithstanding)

Suppose, for the fun of it, we signed Karlsson to $11/year going forward.  And we traded Mitch or Willie to get him, and to make things easier, Zaitsev.
Could we fit the rest of the team under the cap?

Jesus christ. If I was Karlsson I would have told them right there I'm never playing for their team again.

"Hey, Erik, you know how all those old-school Canadian blowhards are always saying you're not as good as Drew Doughty? Would you like to sign a deal confirming that you agree with them?"

Dallas reported to be leading the Karlsson sweepstakes from the cheapskates

Trading him to Dallas for pretty much any prospect other than Heiskanen is going to be absolutely hilarious.

Do you suppose though that maybe that's the thing that's feeding this? Heiskanen is almost certainly the best possible prospect Ottawa could get for Karlsson so maybe the idea that a deal is "close" really just means it's a structure Ottawa likes provided Heiskanen is included but otherwise they're not that interested.

To me, a deal that hinges on whether or not to include one of the best D prospects in the game still might have a ways to go.

It's also pretty funny to see teams that are interested in Karlsson not being willing to give up their top prospects for him. Cody Glass in Vegas, Heiskanen in Dallas. I wonder who's off the table in Tampa. But we're talking about the best defenceman of this generation here, or at worst second best. Aside from a guy like Dahlin there really shouldn't be a prospect in the world who's a no-go in these trade negotiations.

One of the theories floated out there is that currently Dorion is seen as a subpar GM, so other GM's don't want to "lose" a deal with him.

I'm sure there's some of that, but I also think teams feel that have Ottawa in a position of weakness. The perception is that they basically have to move Karlsson, or they'll lose him for nothing next summer. Given that they feel they have the superior bargaining position, why would they offer up their best assets?

I think the thing is there though that you wouldn't draft those guys that high if you didn't believe they were going to be really, really good players and if you really believe that about someone then the math becomes a bit trickier. Basically you're giving up all of the cost controlled years of someone for an older player who's looking to get paid in a major way and while Karlsson is as good as you say I think if you can figure out a way to not include someone you're super-high on you're going to try and work that out.

Especially because more and more it looks like Karlsson going back to Ottawa just isn't an option, teams may think that they have the upper hand as Dorian can't just try and drag it out.

All it takes is 2 interested parties to start driving the price up in negotiations...I don't subscribe to the theory that they all low-balled Ottawa...it's Erik Karlsson they're acquiring here.

It is, but it's an Erik Karlsson coming off a serious foot injury and who maybe wants to get the biggest contract in the game.

I acknowledge that, but I meant even considering those things.
