Official Ottawa Senators Thread

*takes a sip of water*

4. Wilson wouldn?t comment, but it wouldn?t be a surprise if a team looking for power play help makes an offer for Tim Heed. The defenceman had two goals and three assists with the extra man in 29 games. It would be a surprise if he cleared waivers, so someone lower on the priority list might take a chance.

There were rumblings the Senators asked for Ryan Merkley in the Karlsson talks, but I don?t think that?s true. I also believe San Jose circled around Max Pacioretty, although that became less of a priority once Evander Kane was extended. But they kept an eye on him before he went to Vegas, just in case.

*spits water out*

THEY DIDN'T EVEN ASK FOR MERKLEY?!

My assumption there is that San Jose made it clear early on that they were only willing to sacrifice one of their better prospects and the Sens liked Norris more than Merkley, hence "not asking".

Also from that article:

6. Tampa?s a tough organization. Last year, the Lightning battled with already-traded Jonathan Drouin, refusing to pay a 2016-17 bonus because the threshold was 0.73 points-per-game. Drouin finished at 0.726, with the team saying ?rounding be damned, that?s below the line.? Eventually, they paid 90 per cent of the $212,500 amount before an arbitrator ruled on the case. Now this with Dotchin.

And people wonder why players try to get their money.

Ah, right, Tkachuk's bud.

Duchene's reaction to Smith being waived today sure sounded like a guy looking to sign long term there!!!  I think Ottawa is going to feel a lot of pain trying to sign guys in the near future.

Brutal, apparently the coach didn?t even know. They?re going to suck for a long time. No one will choose to be there anytime soon.

Dorion's argument for waiving Zach Smith

"We knew that if we let the team know we are not going to accept what happened last (season), including how Zack played, that hopefully the message would be passed to the room," the club's general manager told TSN's Brent Wallace.

Quite possibly the dumbest thing I have heard a GM say in a long time.

Seriously, he thinks that's going to motivate them? This guy makes Marc Bergevin looks like a genius.  As if that room wasn't already going to be toxic, now it will be nuclear.

I?m surprised there were enough fans to be struck.

It's very well made and thorough and thoughtful.

How cheap are the sens? Well, they don't play again until Saturday so it sure appears like they cut their roster to the league minimum standards to avoid having to pay people a NHL salary for a few days.

The Senators might be my new favourite team:

A number of Ottawa Senators openly joke about their penalty-killing abilities, mock one of their coaches and laugh at the ineffectiveness of special-team meetings in a candid video that was posted online.

...

The five-minute recording, shot from a camera mounted by the rear-view mirror, was subsequently posted on YouTube and Twitter. The bulk of the conversation centres on the team?s defensive woes ? the Senators stand near the bottom of the league in terms of penalty-killing and are dead-last in shots allowed per game.

?Marty Raymond, the only coach in NHL history to have the worst power-play and the worst PK within a calendar year,? says Sens forward Matt Duchene, in reference to Martin Raymond, an assistant coach in charge of the team?s penalty-killing this year and power-play last season.

Things never got this bad in Toronto.  Ottawa is a small market.  I hope they survive the next 2-3 years.  I'm not convinced that they will by any means.  I'm not sure that fanbase can withstand a rebuild.
