Phaneuf To Sens

1 - Cowan signed his current deal as an RFA, so the buyout is 1/3 of salary rather than 2/3s.
2 - His salary in 2016/17 is $4.5 million , much higher than his $3.1 cap hit.  So since a team buying him out has to pay more than his cap hit to do so in actual dollars, they actually receive a credit towards their salary cap.

I *think* that's how it works.

The first point is actually because he's under 26 years old when he's bought out, but basically that yeah. It'd be a $650,000 credit in 16/17 and a $750,000 cap hit in 17/18.

I used to like Michalek years ago, to be honest havent watched an Ottawa game in years. I guess he is done then.  Lindberg sounds intriguing, especially with the Smith connection.
I still can't believe we have not retained salary as I think we all anticipated having to do so.

I guess I'm way out of touch... I thought Cowen was a great player? I guess he isn't?

He was supposed to be good. Apparently he's just big and slow and out of position a lot. Doesn't score. Meh.

Is anyone live blogging the Sens press conference? I'd love to know why Murray did it. Are we holding a presser?

Holy moly, did not see that one coming.

Big win for the Leafs not retaining any salary in the deal. Lindberg sounds interesting as well.

So. ya. That happened.

I think Phaneuf will do well as just a part of a defense rather than being the main guy. I wish him well.

Really curious about what's coming next.

He was a highly thought of prospect shut-down type defenceman that has struggled with injuries. His mobility is basically shot.

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't hold my breath that his career goes in a different direction.

I soooooo wanted the Leafs to draft Cowen in 2009. He and Schenn were going to be the greatest shutdown pairing ever.

Nope. He was a cap dump - an intriguing one because of the potential for a cap credit, though. I doubt he's with the Leafs next season, and I honestly won't be shocked if he's traded to a team who expects to be right up against the cap ceiling next season by the deadline.
