Phil Kessel

Okay, kidding aside, how long has it been since Kessel scored a goal? He scored in the loss to Carolina I think. So does that mean he went zero against TB, Dallas, Anaheim, and now Boston? That's only 4 games - not too bad. But he won't score on Saturday either.

I was enjoying him in the scoring lead....

He's still getting assists and is still in first place in points.  It's been well documented that all goal scorers go into slumps from time to time.  As long as he's still getting chances (he is) and not looking totally lost out there, he'll be fine.

Just checked, he has 5 points in his last 5 games (2 goals 3 assists)

I thought Kessel showed a ton of hustle last night, one of his better games even though he ended up -3 and no goals.

I honestly don't get some Leafs fans.  I've heard again and again how people are waiting for Kessel to hit a massive slump.  So far he and Lupul have been the 2 most consistent players on the team, and they are the LEAST of the Leafs worries right now.  Neither one has shown any sign of slowing down so I don't get all the negative thoughts.

Really?

Man, would it suck if Kessel finished somewhere in the top 10 in both goals and points.

What a waste of a player that would be. You don't win with players that finish in the top 10 of important statistical categories.

Totally. Also, where Seguin finishes totally matters too, without him I just don't know what to think of Phil...

If I was a decent artist either by hand or computer, I'd create a portrait of a Leaf fan holding Phil Kessel under his arm (marked Prime Virginia Ham) screaming "I have no bread!"

Yup. I was.

But I think my expectations went too high. I did not expect him to get 100 goals, or even 75 or 60. But I had hoped as the Leafs started strong, mostly on Kessel's efforts, that the team had finally found there big game "go to" guy. Someone to get the overtime goals like Sundin used to, someone to raise their game to the next level when a big game is on the line. But Phil is not that guy.

Thinking about it, the concern I have is not with Phil - he is what he is - and frankly, players like him do not come along very often. My concern is that the Leafs have yet to find their next Mats, or Dougie, or Wendel etc. That is why I covet a guy like Getzlaf and even get excited about the possibility of a Ryan (though I doubt that Ryan is that guy either).

Dion played okay last night but not enough to take over. Not enough to inspire the team that hey "we can beat the Bruins". The Leafs don't have what many people call a gamer or a game changer. I don't think so anyway. Unless perhaps Reimer is that guy, because last year the Leafs won games that they had no business winning simply because of his efforts.

End of rant.

I still hope to see Phil win the scoring title.

His two goals against the Canes was the beginning of his regression ...  ;) :)

For the record I don't think Kessel will win the scoring title, and I won't be disappointed that he doesn't.  That being said, if he falls out of the top 10 in scoring, THEN I'd be disappointed.  That would mean the rest of his season he'd be scoring under 1 point a game.  Would be nice to see him maintain around a point per game average for the remainder of the 57 games, that would bring his season total to about 89 points and a top 10 finish (most likely)

Edit: 10th spot in scoring last year was 77 points.  Even if Kessel scores at his season pace from last year (0.78 points per game) for the remaining 57 games, he would finish with 76 points.

Kessel is currently on pace to score more points and goals than Sundin ever did as a Leaf in a single season. I'm in no way saying Kessel > Sundin, but lets wait until Kessel drops below that pace before we start complaining he's not playing like a future Hall of Famer (who also got paid a fair bit more than Kessel on average).

I'm not even sure what the hell you're ranting about. After the quarter mark Kessel is still the league leader in goals in points. Maybe his goals aren't inspirational enough for you?

And you're using Getzlaf as an example? What exactly has he inspired his team to do this year?
