Phil Kessel

Some day, hopefully before I die, the Kessel trade won't be brought up every month.

I secretly hope for a 3-way knee-on-knee-on-knee collision between Seguin, Hamilton and Knight, leading to career ending injuries for all.

Dude.

agreed with Frank.  Get over it, Kessel plays for us and is an elite player (can you imagine him with Sundin?). I could give a rats ass about Boston...time to move on. Its one for the ages to decide.

The person who brought up the Kessel trade brought it up to defend it.

Don't worry. After Kessel retires I'm sure it will switch to a bi-monthly reminder.

Some day when I have free time, I'm going to put on my old man voice, call up FAN590, and complain about when Frank Mahovlich was sold off to the Black Hawks.

Perhaps a call to Tonya Harding is in order...  :P

14 goals, 26 assists in 40 games, on pace for something like 29 goals and 53 assists or 82 points over a full season.

Would take that.

First star in last night's game.  I don't mind bringing up the trade because it continues to bear fruit for us.  We got a known quantity in Kessel for the unknown of draft picks.  Looking at the league leaders this morning, Kessel is tied for 10th in the NHL in scoring, 42 points, while Sequin is tied for 46th (with Jiri Tlusty) at 29 points.  For me, the key thing is that we didn't trade for a 30 year old Phil Kessel; we got him at a very young age.  He's only 25 years old now and still probably 2-3 years away from becoming a total player.

I know this will piss off all the nay-sayers, but Burke did the right thing with this trade.

Why...just why?

I agree, I just wish the downers on here would let it go. but we know they wont, some people just need to find the down side of things in life.

Maybe the downers would let it go if people stopped bringing it up?

I thought he played a sensational game.

One thing I have been thinking about as he goes in for a scoring attempt while carrying the puck (and no pass opportunity): he keeps on skating after his wrist shot at full speed, skirting around the net or turning away into the corner.  Now, he is not one to go crashing the net after his shot.  But I'm just wondering if he would sometimes try to even slow up a little bit, he might get his own rebound once in a while.

Shooting at that speed has its merits as well since the goalie has little sign that you are going to release the puck if you don't slow down.

As of right now, Toronto got the best player but Boston got the better assets.

And one year away from UFA status whereas the players Boston got, collectively, have about 15 years of team controlled play left. Anything that happens after next year with Kessel is not intrinsically connected to the trade for him.

The team that got the best player wins the deal.

That's a cliche though, like saying defense wins championships. There's a lot more to a deal than just saying whoever got the best player won the deal.

We can come up with examples where the Leafs could trade Rielly, Gardiner, a bunch of other good prospects for good measure, all for one player, who would concievably be the player out of that deal 3-4 years down the road. Yet it still wouldn't be a good deal for the Leafs, and they definitely would not be the winner.

Even if that weren't true it's at least the sort of thing that needs to be said in hindsight, otherwise the exact same logic would say that it's a win trading any draft pick for any player.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but Kessel has put up top 5 numbers since 2010-11

"Since the start of the 2010-2011 season, RW Phil Kessel has tallied 124 points in 123 games, fifth-most in hockey behind Steven Stamkos, Evgeni Malkin, Claude Giroux and Martin St. Louis."

Where does Seguin sit I wonder?
